Mills of Paddington, Middlesex.
« on: Wednesday 08 October 14 22:45 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm struggling to track this branch of my tree and any help would be much appreciated.

I have a Hester Mills born in Paddington, but am unable to find her on the Census.
She Marries Henry Deary in 1855 in Paddington. The marriage record shows her father as an Edward.

Census puts her DOB at abt 1831 however I have found a baptism for a Hester Mills born to an Edward mills and Sophia in 1826 in Marylebone. (Again I have been unable to trace Edward and Sophia (Sinden?) in the census but have a possible marriage record for them in 1845 in the Strand, London.)

I haven't been able to track Hester on the 1841 census to see if these are her parents or a different family.

In the 1861 and 1871 Census Hester and Henry are living in Marylebone.

Any help or thoughts would be much appreciated,

Donna.

Census puts her DOB at abt 1831

1861 entry shows her b 1827 Marylebone but 1851 says 1831 Paddington

If you look at her marriage cert - it's possible that her surname could have been Miles - not Mills.  Do you have a copy of one of their childrens birth certs to confirm?

Hi Carole,

I'd not spotted that on the Marriage cert, thank you.

It could be Mills or Miles I'm not completely sure squinting at it :) though looking at it again that does look like an E on the marriage certificate, which matches a baptism record Ive found also under the name of Miles.

I don't have an original Certificate, so this might be worth investing in.

Donna

The original 1855 marriage cert is on Ancestry if you have access.  Edward and Sophia baptised 3 other children between 1813-1824  all in St Marylebone.  Surname definitely Miles on baptismal records

Charlotte 30.10.1813
Mary Ann 23.7.1820
Sophia 17.10.1824
Hester you know about

Yes looking on ancestry and think you are bang on the money. :)

I think the Edward Mills Sophia Sinden BMD is something Ive got wrong. I think Sophia Sinden actually marries a Robert Grey in 1845 and the Edward Mills on that BMD record is someone else completely as well.

I do have a marriage for an Edward Miles marrying a Sophia Ward in Paddington in 1804 which now searching Miles instead of Mills is throwing up.
