ELDER History on Isle of Skye:

From Book:

COLIN ELDER
"Colin Elder was a worthy man.  He occupied the farm of Knock, Sleat,
on a lease from Lord MacDonald, at the annual rent of upwards of L400.
His father came to Skye, and occupied the shop at Isle Ornsay, one of the
oldest commercial establishments in Skye.  In the connection, the word,
"Going to Isle Ornsay to buy tea,"  became a proverb in the district.
On the death of his father, Colin took the farm, and, owing to his social position, he was of great service to the Church in his day.
"We made his hospitable mansion our resting-place," says Dr. Beith,
"and not a little enjoyed the intelligent converse of a man who,
although living a most retired life, was a thorough classical scholar,
and alumnus of Marischall College, Aberdeen, and well read in all modern literature.
One of his sons is the present minister of Woolwich, of the English Presbyterian Church."....
In Sleat there were several God-fearing men.
We give the names of some of them--Donald MacClure, a godly catechist;
John MacIntosh, elder; Colonel Elder, of Knock, elder; Ewan MacDonald, Tarskavaig; John MacKinnon, Ardavaser; John MacPherson, and Malcolm MacInnes...."

Note on Chart for John Elder, born about 1766. Married Margaret MacBean
Children: Jane, Elizabeth, Georgina, Colin, b. about 1798,
Alexander Macdonald Elder, Mary Mackinnon Elder,
John Benjamin Elder.
"There is mention in the "Inverness Journal" that indicates that Colin was most probably in Kyleakin in the 1820s.
We have found mention of him there in the 1830's.

Sailing Directions For The North Coast, by George Watson

...."The most likely candidate was John Elder,
who was born in Caithness and was brought up In Skye and Lewis.
In 1543 Elder sent a letter and a 'plotte' or map of Scotland to King Henry VIII. As a cartographer he is
likely to have had the type of information which Lindsay needed."

Hello,

I've been asked by someone who does not have Internet access to help them to try and find other researchers of the following family. Is anyone able to tell me whether the Elder family on this thread is connected to the David Elder below?  It’s a bit difficult for me to work out whether there is a connection or not as I’m not related to this family and I don’t have all the facts.

In our ELDER DNA project, we have Sutherland County matches
for DNA kits, but I don't have a confirmed paper trail.
I'll be happy to talk to anyone researching ELDER surnames.

DNA NEWS:
  FamilyTreeDNA officers from Houston, Texas,
will be attending the Edinburgh Scottish Clan Gathering 2009.
Hope they can find  more ELDER DNA connections for us!

I stumbled upon this thread in the course of a general web search.  I'm hoping that GreenValley is still listening for replies.

My interest is drawn by the following post from '07 (Post #5):
"Intriguingly a David Elder died at Raploch Farm in 1862: fishery officer at Island of Westray, Orkney; then at Helmsdale, and lately resided at Raploch, spouse of Janet Robertson or Elder.Davids family later emigrated to new Zealand or there abouts. My theory is that he must have been related to the "Raploch Elders", why would he be visiting them otherwise? He and his family were planning to emigrate at te time and I think he went to say farewell."

The David Elder in question was my Gt-Gt-Grandfather.  I am descended from one of his sons who emigrated to New Zealand in the 1850-60s.  David Elder, his wife and eldest daughter Jane Kerr elder were planning to come to New Zealand also. However, all three died within the space of 12 months.  Five of the family - 3 sons and 2 daughters - settled in New Zealand and we have full records of their families here. In fact one of my cousins is about to publish a family history in June '09.

I would be very interested to hear from GreenValley to explore the possibility that our lines are linked.  It would certainly seem so as we believe David Elder was taken in by the family at Raploch Farm during his final illness.

Hi Ron,
I hope Greenvalley is able to tell you more, too!
I'd also like to hear more about the soon-to-be-published genealogy.

It would be great if you could help us with the ELDER DNA project.
Let me know if you are interested.

  Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2000 21:20:05 -0400
   >Hi Ann and Listers,
  >I would like to identify the origin of Elizabeth "Mary" PATTERSON
(father William) who was born in the lowlands of Scotland (probably
near Glasgow) about 1700-1708 and married Thomas ELDER either there
or in County Antrim near Lough Neagh, Ireland.
From there they immigrated to PA about 1730-1733  where they settled in Paxtang, PA.
Thomas ELDER left a will dated 8 May 1751 and probated 3 Aug 1752. I
would like to know more about this branch of the Patterson family.
  >Thanks for your help,
Dave

> Hi Dave and Listers
..... >I have a Thomson Family genealogy table prepared by John James Elder
born at Ashgrove, Castlefin, County Donegal, November 5, 1859.
He died in Toronto,Ontario. I don't know when.
His father, Andrew married a Thomson of Moyle, Co. Donegal.
   >I am a Patterson, presently of Ottawa, Ontario, whose GG grandfather,
John Patterson, of Rubbleshinney, Milford, Donegal (b. Oct. 10, 1814)
married another Thomson sister. I can account for the Pattersons of this marriage.
   >John was the son of William Patterson. He married Sarah Jane Gallagher.
    >That is as far as I can go with my Pattersons, right now. The Elders and
Pattersons in this case are cousins.
  >The author of this genealogy identifies his Elder family as being
descended from Robert Elder of Stirlingshire who settled at Burnfoot,
Ireland before 1700.
   >Is this of interest to anyone? Would love to hear from you.

Nancy's note:

Hello,

I was searching for members of the Elder family who settled in Doune, Perthshire at 52 Main Street, Doune, the owner Thomas Elder was well thought of in the area, and there's a display in the Kinlmadock Heritage Centre (located at 52 Main Street, Doune) to his achievements and memory, as I've researched the Elder Families in Lanarkshire & West Lothian, and the display showed that Thomas had been born in Armadale, West Lothian, I thought he could be connected to the Elder families I've been researching - but not that I can find.......   But he does seem to be of the line that you are researching!!  Here's the little I found on him and his family:   regards .... Meg

Graham, Dundas, Tweedie, Somerville, Robb, Watson, Gillespie, Main, Stenhouse, Gilmour, Sneddon, McPheat, all Cauther Families.

Wow, you found quite a lot !!
Unfortunately we have not yet been able to establish the link between our family and Thomas Elder - apart from the fact that my Gt-Gt-Grandfather David Elder died in his house! It seems he went to the Stirling area upon his retirement but we don't know the extent of family connections that might have prompted that move.

Our other family links are with the Linlithgow area where David Elder's father (also David Elder) was married in 1788 and all of his children were born.
