Thanks,  I will remember the shrink link next time sorry.

So, merionethshire church has a spire.

I have seen an old print of Llanfachreth church for sale. One print says Angelsey and the other Merionethshire.

I think we can conclude the latter to be correct unless someone knows different.

many thanks,

Deryn

You can be 100% certain that the picture is of Llanfachreth Merioneth; firstly because the picture is on the Dolgellau catchment pages of the Gwynedd Archaeological Trust's website, and secondly because the article states that the church was built under the patronage of the Nannau estate; the Nannau estate being in Llanfachreth, Merioneth.

Thanks,  I couldn't work out the website the page was from as I got it from a link.

I am heading on down to Llanfachreth soon to have a look around as I have discovered some of my ancestors originated there.

I bought a copy of this print because I recognised it as Llanfachreth, near Dolgellau. However, the title of the print is "Llanfachreth Church Isle if Anglesea", which is incorrect.

The view is similar to the one attached. The church has a number of memorials to the Vaughans of Nannau and a large marble memorial to their relative Anne Nanney. My ancestor, also Anne Nanney (a widow nee Rees), married there in 1766.

David

Thanks David,

I was in a shop and saw the print, Llanfachreth church. It had Dolgellau on it so I was happy to buy it. Then, like you, I saw the print next to it of the same view and it said, Isle of Angelsey. I didn't buy it because I wanted to make sure it was Dolgellau. Of course I can be 100% certain now.

My search took me to Llanfachreth because of a Jane Lloyd b1828. Her maiden name was Robert/s.

Father, William Roberts and mother Catherine Griffith/s, both born in Llanfachreth and married 27 feb 1824.

Have you come across any of these on your searches ?

Thanks again,

Deryn

Hi Deryn,

Unfortunately, my family had left the area by then.

I had a quick look at the censuses etc. but found nothing, except for a Jane Roberts, daughter of William and Catherine, baptised in Llanfachreth in 1828 but she died in 1829.

The records office in Dolgellau is on the Bala Road, just as you turn off up the hill to Llanfachreth. It might be worth a look there, if you make a visit to the church. It is closed on Wednesdays.

Regards,
David
