Researching Gourlay surname in Fife

Can anyone add anything to http://fifegourlay.tribalpages.com

Would love to find a sibling of James (~1800 - 1866)

Festive greetings

Stuart

Hi Stuart ... Season's Greetings to you too ...

I'm not related, although I have quite a number of Gourlay names in my files - but ...

Have you tried the OPRs at Scotland's People?  If you have his parents' names there may just be something there - assuming they were from the Kilconquhar area. The old records from the kirk there are pretty good.

Ceres is a good starting point. I believe the oldest headstone in the kirk cemetery there is a Gourlay one.

The name was quite prevalent in the East Neuk fishing villages.

Maybe a visit to ScotlandsPeople in Edinburgh for a trawl through the Census registers could help you too. A laborious task, but worthwhile.

Aye mair questions than answers in a world where the past was a different place - that cannae be revisited!

Family surnames being researched ...
Crawford, Neilson, Lindsay, Reekie, Davidson
Drummond, Laing, Pearson, Tulloch ... will do for starters but there's a whole lot more!

Hi Stuart,  can't help with your Gourlays but can get you back a couple of generations with Margaret Gatherum who married James Gourlay.
If you would like the info send me your email address in a Private Message.

Kris.

There are a few other Gourlay Fife researchers on RootsChat, just put the name into search box at the top and you will find them ;)
