just wondering if that fits with the 1911 occupation of Manager of Oil Works...

strike that - the children's name and ages match

looks like a quite a step up for Thomas from a labourer to a manager

Here he is in 1891  RG12; Piece: 290; Folio 98; Page 36
30 Red Lion Street Wapping

Thomas Callaghan 30 yrs Marine Stoker
Malvena Callaghan 28 yrs
Margaret Callaghan 4 yrs
Henrietta Callaghan 4 months

all born Wapping

Besides his occupation has been written 'Seas' with a different pen - I suppose just as a further explanation

Found a listing for Thomas in Thom's directory of 1914.

 Seaview Avenue (East)

 8. Thos. Callaghan

(that's all the detail it gives)

There's more than one Seaview Avenue in Dublin, this one is off Church Road, which is off East Wall road, and close to Fairview.

This is interesting - there is a tree for the family with Thomas and Melvina - says that at the marriage, neither party could sign their name.
Thomas did really well then for himself. He signed 1911 census which does say that Melvina cannot r & w.

The tree says that her father is Edward.

Sorry to go back - the 1871 census I found with an older John and a young Thomas, had father David not Dennis.
I can't see now if we have the family at any other time, although as Dennis died 1879, we could only have him in 1861 if he is there.
The tree says that the witnesses at Thomas' marriage were :
Dennis Callaghan and Henrietta Simmons and has been noted that these are possibly brother and sister to Thomas and Malvina.

Unless John is also known as Dennis - who is brother Dennis or is the witness perhaps a cousin?
