Advice Required Re: Proni Visit
« on: Friday 16 May 14 09:05 BST (UK) »
I am going to NI next week and intend to visit Proni on Wednesday.
As I've never been before, I don't quite know what to expect.

Having looked at the Proni site, I know what I need to take re ID ect, but can I assume that advance booking is not required?
Also, most of the records that I wish to look at would be BDMs for Derry and Antrim.
Are these easy to locate?
Can I access more recent records, such as births (say 1900- 1930)
I would welcome any advice.

Many Thanks
Anne

Hi Anne,
PRONI do not hold BMD's. The place you need is The General Register Office of Northern Ireland (GRONI). If you follow this link;

http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/archive-for-family-and-local-history

you will find links to all the info you need to know, costs etc, before going to GRONI. You should make an appointment to use the research rooms computers because there are limited spaces available. The dates you wanted to search wouldn't be a problem either.

Tony

ps there is also a link to the new(ish) online search.

Thank You Tony,
This helps a lot.
I had an idea that I was looking at the wrong site.
I will call GRONI and make a booking in advance.
