The police brought Francis ashore, have you been in touch with the Cork Police? they must have a record were he is buried.  You could also ask one of the local papers to do an article about this to say thank you for Richard Morgan of cork looking after Francis body and getting help. and to say thank you to Serg Cook and Constable Herky.

Hi Ann,

I was applying to the General Register office last week for some certs. and decided to order one for Francis ( the one I found on Familysearch.org and mentioned in one of my previous posts).  I received the cert very promptly and the details are as follows-

Date & Place of Death :   1897 Found Dead July 9th 1897 in River Lee
Name & surname       :   Francis Murphy
Sex                           :   M
Condition                   :   Married
Age Last Birthday       :    38 years
Rank Profession or
Occupation                :    Unknown
Certified cause of
Death                        :   Suffocation by drowning   Accidental
Informant                   :   Information Received from M. Horgan, Coroner for the County of Cork
When Registered         :   July 10th 1897
Signature of Registrar  :   A. O'Conner

Not much new information to go on  but an exact date of death which is helpful.   I am assuming that he was found in the River Lee around the City area but that may not be the case.   You mentioned that a Richard Morgan stayed with him and I searched the national census for that name and the most likely is a Richard Morgan who lived at Blackrock, Cork.  I'm almost sure some
boats would have docked at Blackrock so this may have been where the accident happened.

If Francis was interred in a pauper's grave or "poor ground" as it is known, as I have now ruled out
St. Joseph's cemetery on Tory Top Road, Cork it could be St. Finbarrs Cemetery, Glasheen Road (located in the City Surburbs) or even Curraghkippane cemetery a few miles outside the city( no records exist now for that cemetery unfortunately).  I checked my own photos for Curraghkippane and found a few Murphys but none for Francis.  As you said he is more than likely buried in "poor ground" unless the ship's captain claimed his body and returned it to UK but very unlikely I think.

Don't know if that is any help to you.

Reading through the death cert. again  the fact that his occupation is unknown it would appear
that the authorities did not connect Francis to any ship berthed at the Cork Quays.

You mentioned a letter found in his pocket, What extra information was on that?

Many thanks for the certificate information.
His states on his marriage certificate in 1919 that his father was a miner and still alive.
The letter was from his wife Lizzie.
When he married in 1891 he stated he was 26yrs slight fib there i think.
When i get my own comp back from repairs i will send you over by attachments what i have on this incident.
So if you could send me by pm your email address  i will send all across to you hopefully back on mine monday.

Got birth certificate for Francis Murphy with the date 1865 which would of been the right year if he had been 26yrs when he married. But wasnt the right father for him.. Have found a birth in 1859 in Leitram Ireland where i believe there is a connection to a Carney family.Problem is there are no further details regarding volume or page nos.Where would i go to get a certificate for this.
