Griffith's Valuation Books- now online for Tyrone
« on: Wednesday 27 February 13 09:45 GMT (UK) »
Good news for anyone trying to trace family or property in the 6 counties of Northern Ireland- PRONI's long talked about project will soon be released- http://irish-genealogy-news.blogspot.ie/

"... I stopped by at the PRONI stand where some more good news was in store. The Valuation Revision Books are going to be launched online on the PRONI website at the end of March! These cover the year 1864 to 1930. Janet Hancock told me that they're 'geographically indexed', meaning that they will be searchable by townland/parish rather than by name. Superb news for anyone with ancestors from Northern Ireland.
PRONI operates a 'one big upgrade/release a year' programme and the Valuation Revision Books will be this year's pleasure parcel. In the wings for 2014 is a big upgrade to the Wills collection..."

The printed version of Griffith's Valuation can be found on several online websites, including this one where you can search by name or place (although it doesn't pick up spelling variations) and also view maps-

Thanks for letting us know:) Any new access to sources is great news! I'm not quite sure what I might find in these Revision Books but I'll still be excited to look at them. My adventures in family history have repeatedly taught me the importance place so anything about the history of my family's townlands is welcome.

And I wonder what they can do to make the wills even better in 2014? I thought everything surviving was already up for 1858 until the era protected by privacy?

I think the PRONI site does an excellent job with their image viewing as well as the indexing and navigation. The only big problem is with spelling variations and wildcards.

The PRONI wills site only contains index information up to 1943, but they do hold wills after that right up to at least 2004, if not later. However the indexes for post 1943 wills are not on-line and you need to go into PRONI and look up the Wills index books. You can then order the will up and read it. Once someone has died and probate granted, it’s a public document and is not closed due to any privacy laws.

I think there is a ten year restriction from the time probate is granted- the extract is available in the Will books but you have to wait ten years before viewing Will or any paperwork to do with administration.
