do you have John's occupation? there's a very traceable John Hayes the right age b Grayrigg and in the Kendal district who becomes the railway station master. he claims to be unmarried in 1881 and later has a wife Jane Agnes, who he marries around 1884.

Has to be said, just because your Jane says she's a widow, it doesn't mean she is - it was often the route taken when you hadn't seen your spouse for some years 9divorce not really an option in those days)

Hi

The John Hayes who became station master can be ruled out, occupational records give his date of birth as 7 Oct. 1855 .

Hi
I have Jane Pennington  and John Hayes on a family tree as Jane is an extended member of my Alderson tree.
Like you I have no info on John Hayes, I have not been able to find him in the census.
I have Jane in 1861 - 1911.
I have 6 children for her, John Pennington (later known as Hayes )b.1875 Kendal ( b. before the marriage to John Hayes.
Robert b. 1878 Kendal, Hugh 1880 Kendal, Jeannie 1886 Kendal, Mary 1887 Milnthorpe. Edith 1890 Milnthorpe. I have this info from census only no certs or P.Reg info.
Perhaps you have a B.Cert for one of the children although the father given may not be correct.
What occupation was given on John's marriage cert. Do you have him in the census before his marriage ?
There are many possibilities for his non appearance, ie mis transcribed or poss emigrated What about Scottish census ?
Smol

Hi smol,
Thanks for your message, I have John & Janes Birth certificates and marriage certificate.
I also have son John b 1875 certificate no father named, and his marriage certificate.
Robert's 1878 father John Hayes (Locomotive Fireman) Hugh 1879 father John Hayes occupation Labourer. I dont have a Jeannie. Edith 1890 on certificate was born in Milnthorpe Workhouse no father named, Jane was it seems in said workhouse in 1881 with her 2 sons Robert & Hugh. In 1891 she was still in workhouse & had 3 daughters whilst in there. Mary 13/12/1887  ( no certificate ) Edith 15/1/1890 ( certificate ) & Jane 15/6/1893 no certificate.
John's occupation on marriage certificate Fireman, Found him on 1871 census in Cumberland but nothing after that. It does appear Jane remarried 1897 to a Henry Hillbeck (widow on certificate)
On John Hayes & Robert's marriage certificates it states John Hayes father occupation engine driver but it doesnt say father deceased, Oh i have got a real difficult one me thinks. :P
