Bodycote, Noon, Sibson - Leicester St Leonard and St Margaret
« on: Sunday 12 June 11 15:02 BST (UK) »
I am now having another go at unscrambling the Bodycotes, without a great deal of success, which is par for the course with this line.

In 1851 at 67 Denham Street in the parish of St Margaret Leicester, we have a large household that I can’t quite figure out.

Joseph Bodycote aged 54, stocking knitter, born Leicester St Leonard, is the head of the household.  He's a known quantity.

Amelia Chapman aged 24, also a stocking knitter, born Mansfield Notts, is his illegitimate daughter, and William Chapman aged 26, stocking knitter, born Leicester St Margaret is his son in law.  They were married in Leicester in the June Quarter of 1847.

At the moment I know nothing about Joseph’s antecedents.  His marriage entry is silent as to his parents and I cannot find an appropriate entry in the IGI for his birth.  There is one for 1799,  but that seems a bit late as he was allegedly 19 when he joined the army in 1813.  I also do not yet know who Amelia’s mother is – all I know is that she was not Joseph’s wife.

The other members of the household are Charlotte Noon aged 40, also born Leicester St Margarets and described as a niece, Joseph Noon aged 21, born Newtown Linford, described as a nephew, and three visitors, John Sibson aged 46 and Richard Sibson aged 22, both born Leicester St Margarets, and Lucy Sibson aged 16, born Mansfield Notts.

It is possible that Charlotte Noon was born in 1810, the daughter of John Noon and Maria Sibson, married at St Margarets in August 1806, which suggests that all the members of this household may in some way be related…but how?  And are they related to Joseph Bodycote, or to his daughter, through her mother.

Any ideas?  This lot are driving me mad!

Notts FHS baptism CD has this, which looks as though it might be relevant:

1827 03 11,at  MANSFIELD St Peter and St Paul;  Amelia daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth BODICOT address Ratcliff Ga; Joseph was a Stockinger.

There are no other baptisms listed for children of this couple.

Thanks Annie - that looks like our Amelia.

Mother is Elizabeth - here we go again.

I don't suppose there is any danger of there being a full birth entry with mother's 'maiden' name on it.

I fear that Joseph, just to spite me, may have found himself a fancy woman with the same name as his lawful wife!

That's all the info on the disc; perhaps if you post on the Notts board, someone will be going to the records office and will be able to look up the original entry for you.

What happened subsequently to these assorted Noons and Sibsons? And is that Joseph I see in 1841, allegedly 35 years old and living in Eaton St with Mary (age 20), Emily (12- poss Amelia?), Ann (1 month), Ann SIMSON age 40 and Charlott NOON age 25?

I think I've found John, Richard and Lucy in 1841, in Sutton in Ashfield and transcribed as Sipson - do you have this?

--- and if that is them, it looks like Mary Sipson's maiden name was Ellis, and they married in Sutton in Ashfield in 1836.
Lucy Sipson bapt Sutton in Ashfield 15.6.1834, parents John (FWK) and Elizabeth. No marraige listed for John and Elizabeth.

Hi

The marriage you mentioned in 1806 between John Noon and Maria Sibson have you seen the full entry or just family search?  I am wondering if Maria Sibson was a widow,  there is a baptism in St Leonards in 1803 for a John Sibson s/o John & Maria and I can't see anymore for this couple after that,  in which case it would be an idea to find the marriage of John Sibson to a Maria to find out her maiden name

I'm all over this like a rash Annie, so I'm aware of the Sibson/Sipson family and I have also followed Amelia through to the 1901 census and her death that year.  I have Joseph in 1841 and 51, but who these various people are and how they are connected I am not sure.

I shall just have to pick them off one by one.

Thanks for your help and support.
