Hello

I first checked the free wills search section on www.scotlandspeopele.gov.uk.  There was one for a mason called William Park , but he would have been too young.  I then did a search for deaths for  a William Park - between 1855 and 1900 - in all of Dumfries - there are only 8.  Only 3 fitted the criteria for being the correct age to be the father of 'your' Janet. One dies in Closeburn in 1872 aged 66, one dies in  Moffat in 1866 aged 66,  and a further dies in Dumfries in 1865 aged 61.

Then went and did a search on www.freecen.org.uk - on the 1841 census and yippee - looks like your couple.  Fortunately the wifes maiden name is given.

Place - Middlebie - Dumfries-shire.  Civil Parish:  Middlebie.  Address Westfield.

If you go to the website and enter the name William Park, change the default year from 1891 to 1841.  Put in the census county and press search.  You'll find find Williams name half way down the front page. When you click on the tab, it'll take you to the family.  if you click on the 'previous' tab above the address, it'll take you to a family - at the same address - called Johnstone - headed by a 40 year old Walter Johnston - mason, and his wife Jannet.  A good chance Williams brother in law and wife

Regards,   Steve

Note regarding the 1841 census:  Ages of those over 20 were rounded down to the nearest 5 years, therefore a person age 44 would be shown as aged 40. Those under 20 years of age were meant to be recorded with their proper age.

Hello

Went back on to Scotlands People  (SP), and searched from 1855 (first year of National Registration in Scotland) to 1900.

There is only 1 Jane Park - other name Johnstone dying in Dumfries-shire

1882 PARK JANE   JOHNSTONE F 84 MIDDLEBIE /DUMFRIES 841/00 0029

Hopefully someone here can post the 51, 61, 71,and 81 census as it appears that this lady is most likely yours.  It'll allow you to find a 'window' for the death of William.  You'll also have to register on SP - free to do so and search, but to view costs - spend a min. of £6.00 and this will allow for the download of up to 5 bmds or census records - copies - not transcriptions.

I shall bow out of this thread now.  Good luck.

Regards,  Steve  :)

Back on again.

Went on to the IGI at

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

Can only find Elizabeth Byers born 16 Oct 1856, Middlebie, Dumfries, Scotland.

Possibly the births pre 1855 weren't recorded or have been lost.  A copy of Elizabeths birth entry giving both parents names and father occ.  as well as address will be available for download from SP.

Regards,  Steve

Hi Steve:

I stopped for supper and when I got back on my computer there were all of these posts.  You were able to accomplish in a short time what I had spent the afternoon trying to do.

I was not aware of the freceen.org.uk site.  Thanks for this valuable source.   I had been using a 14 day trial on Ancestry.com and having no luck on this one.  Thanks for the info.  I will check out your other links and hints.  I have used the SP site and have had great luck but had not been able to crack this one.  I will look at what you have done as it looks like I could use some pointers.

Again thanks for all your help.  This is the very reason that I like this site so much

More information but just as many questions.  Found William Park and family in 1841 census as described below on Ancestry.com living with another family:
Walter Johnstone Age 40
Jannet Johnstone age 40
Mary Johnstone age 15
Isabella Johnstone age 10
William Johnstone age 8
Margt Johnstone age 3

Searched 1851 census for William Park with no luck.  Did find the following again Ancestry.com
Jean Park Head of household b abt 1803 age 48
Isabella Park Daughter b abt 1838 age 12
William Park Son B abt 1841 age 10

Searched 1861 census found following Ancestry.com:
Jane Park Head of household b abt 1802 age 59
Mary Park Daughter b abt 1829 age 33
William Park Grandson b abt 1853 age 8
Thomas Park Grandson b abt 1857 age 4
Jane Park Granddaughter b abt 1860 age 5 mo

Searched 1871 Census found following Ancestry.com:
Jane Johnstone Head of household b abt 1808 age 63
William Park Grandson b abt 1853 age 18
Thomas Park Grandson b abt 1857 age 4
Jane Park Granddaughter b abt 1852 age 19 ?????????????

Searched 1881 census found following Ancestry.com:
Jane Park Head of household b abt 1802 age 79
Ann Park Daughter b abt 1841 age 40
Mary Ann Park Granddaughter b abt 1873
This family is living at Lauries Close Cottage which is where Jane Park died in 1882 at the age of 84 years of age.  The informant of death was Thos Park Grandson.

I believe that this may be the same family through the years.  Not sure why the switch from Jane to Jean and back as well as the back and forth between Park and Johnstone.  Ages bounce around a bit as well.  There are as many discrepancies in the information as there are things that appear to be too much the same for coincidence.

I would appreciate any comments on this information and the likelyhood that this is the same family through the years :-\

One more bit of information:

Went on ScotlandsPeople and got the 1851 census record for Jean Parks.  Appears as if she was a widow.  Search same site OPR for a William Park death/burial between the dates of the 1841 and 1851 census in Dumfriesshire with no results.  Did find following:

"April 21st 1851 Buried in Kirkpatrick Church-yard William Park lately at"...... ??? ???

Looks as if record was not finished.  Doesn't look as if this is my William unless there is some reason why he would have been buried a period of weeks after his death.  I am not familiar with the geography of this area and have no idea of the proximity of Kirkpatrick and Middlebie where his family was.
