Murdoch McLennan marr Johanna Fraser abt 1842
« on: Saturday 21 June 14 09:10 BST (UK) »
And now comes the hard bit - all I know about these is that Murdoch's father was Hector, and that Johanna was a sister of Ann Fraser 1802- 1870 who was living at McLellans/McLennans Mountain when she married Alexander McKenzie in 1825 in Boularderie.
other sibilings were Archibald Fraser, Christie Fraser, Flora Fraser, Isabella 'Bella' Fraser, Simon Fraser and Parents were allegedly James Fraser and Barbara Cameron, and the children were apparently born in Ross and Cromarty, Scotland - it has been suggested that the family went to NS in about 1818?

Any help, suggestions gratefully received.
Regards
Jan

Hi Jan,

Have you looked at the 1851, 61, etc censuses on the Canada National Archives cite (free access) for the families?  These censuses are also available in Ancestry (fee-based access)?

I will try 1851 After that they'd gone to NZ. I was hoping therewere some Boularderie or Cape Breton  marriages hanging about some where :)

Are you looking for information on the Fraser's or on Murdock McLennan.

Boularderie is in Victoria county, Cape Breton.

McLennan's/McLellan's Mountain is in Pictou County.

These 2 areas are not close to each other. If you look at early accounts of McLennan's Mountain, it was settled by many surname Fraser as well as McLennan.

BMD's at the Historical Vital Statistics site don't start in the time period you are looking for. There are a few marriage bonds but not for the above mentioned.

If you do some searches for the above surnames and the corect area of Nova Scotia, you may come up with more information. There is a Murdock McLennan that left NS inthe late 1840's, early 1850's for Ontario and then to Manitoba. He is very hard to locate but did have a brother Kenneth that also went on to Ontario and Manitoba.

If this family went on to NZ, can you post the names and when they traveled as that could help in searches within Canada. Most early census records for NS haven't survived, just bits and pieces of different areas. You may get lucky with the 1851 or 1861 census if they were in Ontario at the time. You would look under Canada West if Ontario isn't listed.

McLennan/Fraser names are hard to track as the Scots used the naming pattern and the names are used over and over again. Some of the common shortened names will be Murdo/Archy
