Please help find FEWKES marriage(s).
« on: Thursday 06 March 14 15:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have been trying to locate a marriage between :

Charles FEWKES (spelling varies) born at Quorndon about 1836/7; and
Sarah FEWKES ( spelling varies ) Born at Wellow, Notts in 1833.

I can find the pair in the census records from 1871 to 1911 (But NOT 1861).
The 1911 census shows Married 50 yrs with NO children were born to them.
Sarah can be found in the :
 - 1841 Census living in Barrow-upon-Soar.
 - 1851 census living in New Quorndon.

HOWEVER two grandchildren live with them both born at Huncote.
Frederick (William) FEWKES (GRO March Qtr 1877 ) and Gertrude FEWKES(GRO June qtr 1885)

My attempts to find marriages of Charles and Sarah have only resulted in frustration !

Please can you help.

Hi

Where does the information that Sarah's surname is Fewkes come from if you have not found children's birth certificates and don't have a marriage  :-\

I think it's been partially mis-transcribed.

On FreeBMD there's a marriage of

Charles Fewkes
in Market Bosworth Registration District
Q4, 1859,
vol 7a, p.117

but there's no matching spouse.

However, looking at the original, I think it's p.177 (not p.117), and when I put that in I get three names:

Burton, Mary Ann
Kenny, William James
and
Knight, Sarah

so that would be where I'd start.

Hope this helps.

That would kinda fit with the number of complete years married given on the 1911 census!

That suggests a marriage in 1861?

I should think that by the time you've been married for 50 years, it's easy to loose count of the odd year or two ;)

Good detective work STG!

Perhaps the grandchildren were from a 1st marriage of Charles? Or even of Sarah if she had been married before & a son of hers took the name Fewkes.

It's not the right marriage I'm afraid

Checking the marriage disc I have

1859   4   KNIGHT   Sarah    Mkt Bosworth
Ibstock   25-Dec   1859
KENNY   James William

Have double checked with a PDF I have and again confirms the Kenney marriage
