George WOOD died Dec 1843 Market Harborough
« on: Sunday 25 May 14 20:54 BST (UK) »
Death Index:
WOOD    George    M Harbor    Vol 15    Page 127

Leicester Journal. Fri 15th Dec 1843, page 3:
"DEATHS
On the 8th inst. at Market Harborough, at the Cock Inn, aged 32, Mr George Wood."

Hello
Can anyone help me with my brick wall by giving me any information to prove this gentleman mentioned above is not my ancestor. 'My' George WOOD was born April 1812, was a Methodist minister and died around 1844 or end of 1843.  I am working through the death index requesting certificates where needed, but I can't be sure info given by the informant for the certificate for my ancestor would be accurate so I'm trying all methods.  :-\

The gentleman mentioned above would have been born around 1811. It's very likely that there was at least one George WOOD born around that date in the Market Harborough area. Does anyone know who that Gentleman was, children's and wife's name?  Occupation, places he lived?

I did a search of newspaper archive but didn't find any mention of an inquest.  Thank you

Angelfish

The only George Wood I can see of the right sort of age, anywhere in Leicestershire in 1841 is:

Little End, Wimeswold
George Wood 29 Ag lab Y
Isaac Wood 2 Y

He may have been in the Cock INn in Market Harborough and met his end.
But then, I guess , any George Wood from any part of the vcountry could have been at an Inn, passing through.
I guess, it is less likely that a Primitive Methodist Minister would be in an Inn  ;D

Where was "your" George in 1841, just before he died?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

5 Oct 1843 he registered the birth of his child Spalding Lincolnshire. This is the area the mother was from.

The Oct 1843 issue of the methodist magazine contains a list of the preachers at different stations. G.Wood is shown at Sheffield L D (within Nottingham district).

Wifes father dies 2nd May 1846. Obituary in the September Methodist magazine says:
"... and there they [his remains]
were interred beside those of his son-in-
law, the late Mr. George Wood, Primitive
Methodist minister, whose " flesh rested
in hope" about two years and six months
ago."

1851 wife is shown as a widow. Donington, Lincolnshire.

He moved around a lot. Ministers were stationed and moved every two years:

The Wimeswold George Wood was around in subsequent censuses up to 1871 (at least!) so it couldn't have been him.

The fact of the dead man's death being reported without further explanation in a local paper would suggest to me that he was a local man.

I don't suppose there are any wills/probate for any possible George Woods?
Bradbury (Sedgeley, Bilston, Warrington)
Cooper (Sedgeley, Bilston)
Kilner/Kilmer (Leic, Notts)
Greenfield (Liverpool)
Holyland (Anywhere and everywhere, also Holiland Holliland Hollyland)
Pryce/Price (Welshpool, Liverpool)
Rawson (Leicester)
Upton (Desford, Leics)
Partrick (Vera and George, Leicester)
Marshall (Westmorland, Cheshire/Leicester)

Not that I've seen (on ancestry). I think it was a bit too early for lots of probates. Plus he was young, and Primitive Ministers were poor.

Thanks for the 1871 census lookup, I hadn't thought of it.

Where was he buried? Perhaps the burial register would show his address?

Very good question.  He isn't listed on any burial register.  The only reference to his burial is the father in laws obituary which implies they were both buried at the Primitive Methodist Chapel at Gosberton Clough (Lincolnshire).  It has since been knocked down.  There are no other records of any burials there, it didn't have a graveyard.

I know it sounds quite far fetched. It's my brick wall.

What was the father in law's name?

Have you looked at the 1841 census to see who lived at the Cock Inn, Market Harborough?

William DRAPER c1776-1846

I haven't looked at the 41 census for the Cock Inn but I will try that. Lots of newspaper reports came up for it. Staying open after hours etc. It may have changed hands a bit.
