is there any one who is able to tell me what this news is on  my mums family as i found it on the british newspaper for markfield leicester .
charles cooper markfield  3035411.
cooper benjamin  markfield  932202250.
cooper charlotte whetstone  40985.
cooper  mrs .e. seagrave 5215840
as i dont what this means .

It looks like a list of phone numbers, some living in Markfield the other in Seagrave

Hi,

I would have thought it unlikely to have phone numbers in newspapers.  The number for Charlotte seems to appear in an article from a newspaper in 1876.

So with that year highly unlikely to be phone numbers although that is what it looks like, certainly with Whetston, Markfield and Seagrave all Leicestershire locations it is likely to be  a locational thing

Some of the numbers are against the wrong people, who are in a list of Land Owners

In the case of Charles Cooper of Markfield it is 4 0 9   8 5

4 0 9 is the extent of his land, possibly acres chains and yards, and 8 5 is the estimated rental, which is probably in pounds and shillings because none of the second figures in the list exceed 19.

P.S. The area is in Acres, Roods and Perches and the value is in pounds and shillings

1 acre = 4 Roods

1 rood = 40 perches

1 perch = 30 sq yards (approx)
