Looking for a Birth c1835
« on: Thursday 26 May 05 15:49 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a birth of Benjamin Bowman who was born around 1835.  I have no idea what part of England he came from, but in the 1871 census in Canada he is listed as being born in "England".   His wife is Sophia Ellis who was born around 1838 in England, again I'm not sure where.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Karen

Hi Karen

Do you have any idea when they emigrated?  Also, any known children born in England?  When/where did they marry?

Best wishes

Hi there,

I just looked over some other notes, and it seems that in 1881 Benjamin is also known as "John Benjamin Bowman".  He lists his age as 50, which puts him born c1831.  I have no idea if they would have been married here in Canada or over in England.  Their first daughter, Mary was born c1854, it says her birh is in England in 1871 on the census, but in the 1881 it says Ontario, Canada.

On Sophia (Ellis) Bowman's death registration in 1927, it lists her birthplace as England.  Her father is listed as Ellis,?, born in England and her mother is Ann Kell, born in England.

Any ideas?
Karen

Hi Karen

I have found this marriage on the IGI http://www.familysearch.org

William ELLIS m Ann KELL 12 Apr 1824 Kirton in Lindsey, Lincolnshire

Whether that is relevant or not ???

If you would like to try and search for the marriage of Benjamin BOWMAN to Sophia ELLIS:

The complete set of BMD indexes are online http://www.1837online.com but it is pay per view.  These are gradually being transcribed and becoming freely available at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com

Best wishes

Wow, thanks that great.  Perhaps now I can see if they are in the 1841 census and have a daughter Sophia.

Got all excited when I found some Sophia Ellises in the Ancestry BMD...
But couldn't match with Bowmans!...Did 1851, 1852 1853 and 1854
Did find some Johns...but again, not a match to the place of marriage...
Put them up for you to try the Bowman check, in case it is my eyes deceiving me...

Oh, my goodness, at least her name wasn't Sarah...what a popular name Sarah Ellis was!  J.J.

Hi JJ,

Thanks for those. You would think a combination of the names Sophia and Benjamin would be easy  ::)  Maybe I should track down what happened to the first daughter Mary Bowman, who she married and such and see when she died and what they listed as her birthplace.
