Hammond family of Graiguenamanagh
« on: Saturday 19 June 10 14:04 BST (UK) »
My 2xGreat Grandmother was Catherine Hammond born 1840 in Graiguenamanagh, Kilkenny. She was the daughter of Henry Hammond a Blacksmith and Honor Lee.

Henry moved from Graiguenamanagh to Thomastown and then Kilkenny. I believe he was possibly the grandson of the Heroic Blacksmith of 1798 Graiguenamanagh who was hanged for his part in the Irish Rebellion, so trying to find out more about this family or find anyone else connected.

I found this information about him:

Hi there,

do you know how your family relate to my Catherine Hammond daughter of Henry Hammond and Honor Lee.

I haven't been able to put the family back to Henry Hammond 1798 as yet, because I can't find the record to do so, but the fact my Henry Hammond husband of Honor Lee is a blacksmith. I am pretty sure he is a descendant.

Hi there,

The free index on ifhf shows the marriage of a Henry Hammond to a ? Lee in 1842 in Graignamanagh RC Church - while I don' think these very early church records / transcriptions have the bride and groom's father's names on them - but you may get another lead from it ie witness' names

IFHF is a pay per view site

Still stuck on this family. The marriage had no parents names and was for a Anne lee, still honor do you think? They had a daughter born 1840 which would mean they married after she was born.

Hi there,
My niece has been telling me about someone online trying to trace information on Henry Hammond, Graiguenamanagh. My father inherited Henry Hammond's home and that's where we grew up. The townsland is called Aghclare, Graiguenamanagh. This is the official spelling. Locally we spell it "Aclare". We have always wanted to know more about Henry but we know very little. No one is sure if he was married or not. No one even knows what age he was. It is suspected that after his hanging many of his family were deported to Canada or Australia. There are two census online now 1901 and 1911. You will see his ancestors are still in the house and are blacksmiths. Have you made any more progress yourself, or what is your family's connection to Graiguenamanagh? Would love to hear.
