Poplar Workhouse/Institution address
« on: Wednesday 22 February 12 13:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I have a colleague at work whose mother's birth cert gives an address of 86 High Street Poplar in 1922.
Looking through on line archives in looks like 84-88 High Street were knocked down in 1901 to build a house for the medical officer of the workhouse.
On another forum I have found someone else looking for a couple of other completely different people at the same address in 1930 based on an invoice from a supplier.
The question is does anyone know if 86 High Street was used as the address for the workhouse during the 20s and 30s?

Regards,

Andrew

Hi

It looks as if there is enough evidence (on the internet) to say it was the official address

e.g. the bankruptcy of the workhouse master Richard Denver Bushell in 1928.

In 1929 the Local Government Act abolished all Poor Law Authorities and transferred their responsibilities for "public assistance" to local councils. So by then the Poplar Institution not the Poplar workhouse is included in the trade directory for 1934 at the same address.

Hi, its been a while since your post, but this may be of some help.   My Nana gave birth to an illegitimate child at 86 High Street Poplar in 1921, on the birth certificate, it says 86 High Street as the birth place as well as my Nanas address.
