PROSSER surname interest
« on: Sunday 16 December 07 10:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi.......I have an interest in the surname Prosser which I believe has its' origins in Herefordshire. Would anyone be able to tell me if there is a particular Parish that the name was more popular in and also which County in Wales is most likely to feature this name.

Appreciate any help.......best wishes.....Karma

Hi Karma,

Have alook at  http://www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk
It will show you surname distribution in 1881

Having checked 1881 Ewyas Harold seems to be a hotspot for Prossers in Herefordshire

I am researching the Prosser surname in Monmouthshire,
now Gwent of course.  This was my Mothers maiden name
and although she was born in Glamorgan, her Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather and Great Great Grandfather
all appear to have come from around the town of Monmouth
and a number of villages in that area.  I was advised by the
National Library of Wales a number of years ago the name
could possibly have been Rosser.  You could check this on
your own but I believe Ap as in Ap Rosser would be Son of
Rosser in much the same way as Mac or Mc appears with
Scots or Irish names. The Ap was dropped over time and
became Prosser.  Don't know if this has any connection to
your research, but one of my Prossers married an Eliza Goode in Ebbw Vale, Mon. May 1898.  Eliza was born in
Much Marcle.
I would guess that over the years, or perhaps centuries may
be more appropriate, people moved between Monmouth and
Herefordshire and Gloucestershire a great deal, so it may be
difficult to prove whether Prosser is actually a Welsh or an
English name.  Perhaps there are others who could come up
with a better explanation.

Thanks alot Roaming Grannie for taking the time to reply.  I go back to Elizabeth Prosser marrying Robert Pryce in 1740. I am aware of the connection to Herefordshire but suspect this marriage would be in Wales.....either Radnorshire or Montgomeryshire. As for Elizabeth's birthplace I haven't looked into it at this point.
I appreciate the information you have given.

All the best..........Karma :)

My Mother in laws maiden name was Prosser. She was born in Cardiff as was her father, But his father was born in Bristol and before that they seem to have been born in the Almondsbury area of Gloucestershire. I have managed to get as far back as a John Prosser born 1760 in Almondsbury. I have not found a connection with Herefordshire yet, but you never know.

My Mother was also a Prosser. born Longtown Herefordshire 1927. My Grandfather  Wallace  had at least 2 brothers and 2 sisters and we are related to the Prosser family who lived at the Common in Ewyas Harold. My Grandfather died in 1945 and he was a builder. He married Miriam Kate Williams.
