Anglesey to Patagonia
« on: Monday 09 January 06 11:07 GMT (UK) »
I found out over the holidays, on talking to my grandfathers sister, that 2 of her uncles emigrated to Patagonia. First I'd heard about it actually.

They were from Holyhead, Anglesey, and the time frame would be 1850s to 1880s, I suppose.

Has anyone here any experience on researching Patagonia at all?

Nope D no experience at all, but I do remember watching a TV program a while back with Ansley Harriot (TV Chef) visiting Patagonia, he spent a day with some Welsh/Patagonians who spend part of the year farming there and part of the year in Wales, I was fasinated that there is still a strong link between those there and the homeland, as I recall some of them still speak Welsh.

What a trill to have that link in your tree, good luck with your research

Hello D ap D
You might find the ANW site (www.archivesnetworkwales) and the article on the Bodiwan Papers of interest (type Bodiwan in the search box). It came up when I was looking for information on Plas yn Rhal (nr. Ruthin). Michael D Jones who married the heiress to Plas yn Rhal was much involved with the Welsh colony in Patagonia - sounds like it cost him a lot of money!
Good luck

Hi D
I spend a lot of time in North Wales out on the Llyn Peninsular in a village called Nefyn. This village is Twinned with Madryn in Patagonia.
I believe this is because families from Nefyn, Morfa Nefyn, Edern &  Madryn etc emigrated with the help of a local wealthy landowner to go and work in the mines in Patagonia. I'm sorry I don't know the dates but at least you have a village name in Patagonia. Good Luck. Gilly.

Take a look at http://www.culturenetcymru.com/en/  Article on a recent visit to Patagonia to mark the 140th anniversary of the establishment of the Welsh settlement.

What looks like a good database of settlers in Argentina in the 19th and 20th centuries can be found at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jnth/
This site also includes a search engine for researching specific names.
A list of passengers on the Mimosa, the first ship to Patagonia 28 July 1865, can be found here:  http://www.immigrantships.net/v3/1800v3/mimosa18650728.html
I discovered these when carrying out research for a Patagonian descendent of Aaron Jenkins of Mountain Ash.
Cheers Dave
