SS. Arethusa - New Zealand Voyage 1879
« on: Saturday 10 May 14 00:27 BST (UK) »
While I have found the passenger list for this voyage, I am interested in finding a crew list as it is rumored that my great grandmother Fredricce Olava Olsen met her husband to be on this voyage which arrived in New Zealand about June 1879.

I would like to prove or disprove this theory as i have no record of his arrival in New Zealand. He was a ship's carpenter. Originally know as Frans Theodor BERGSTROM but in New Zealand was William Francis ANDERSON

Hi Don

It is a huge library.  You never know what you can find there. It is worthwhile giving them a try. Google them to see what they have, and/or send them an email and ask.

Hi Donl,

I'll have a look on my next visit to Archives, as the National Library (of which the Turnbull is a part) is only up the road.

Don't get your hopes up, though. I believe it was unusual for crew to be listed during this period.

Hello Don...

Sort of guesswork as there were four Arethusa's sailing at the time but judging by the following PapersPast article which mentions a registered tonnage of 1272 tons, a Captain Steven and most importantly the year of construction...

THE SHIP ARETHUSA, FROM CARDIFF - 14 March 1879
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0z7t/

...and the following passengers list which mentions the same tonnage, a Captain Stiven plus your g-grandmother Frederica OLSEN...

Arethusa - arrived Wellington 7 Dec 1879
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ourstuff/Arethusa.htm

...I'd say the Official Number of the Arethusa is more than likely 63196

Arethusa - Registered 1869 - Liverpool
http://www.crewlist.org.uk/data/vesselsnumview.php?OfficialNumber=63196

EDIT:
Have just checked the
Mercantile Navy List (which I should have done earlier) and 63196 is the right Arethusa

If that's the case (trust me... it is :) ) then any surviving crew list from 1879 is held at the Central Library in Liverpool.

Scroll down the page to 1879
http://www.mun.ca/mha/holdings/viewcombinedcrews.php?Official_No=63196

Maybe ask for a lookup on the Lancashire board. Include the following reference...

Hope the link works...

387 CRE - Crew Lists - 387 CRE/68
Title: Arethusa
Description: Official number 63196
Owners: Hamilton Bros
Date   1875-1881

http://archive.liverpool.gov.uk/calmview/Record.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&id=387+CRE%2f68

-----

It might also be an idea to ask for an Auckland Library look-up on the MHA Crews List CD to see if Frans BERGSTROM is mentioned. If he didn't serve on the Arethusa it may list a ship upon which he did serve.

Again, hope the link works...

Hi Don...

Do you mind if I post on the Lancashire board for the Liverpool library look-up.

Curious to know if I was on the right track.

Regards
Beg

Hello Don...

The Crew Lists have recently been scanned and transcribed by ancestry.com

The progress bar at the following link ticked over to 100% just last week.

World Archives Project:
Liverpool, United Kingdom, Crew Lists 1860-1919

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0157b/

Not sure when the records will appear on ancestry but I'm guessing within a month or two. Will keep an eye out for them.

Many thanks to Rootschatter Blue70 for telling me about the transcribing :)

Regards
Beg
