Jacob WELLS and Martha in Chelmsford circa 1791
« on: Sunday 28 September 14 00:39 BST (UK) »
Jacob WELLS married Elizabeth BATES in Donington-in-Holland Lincolnshire 24-6-1819 and one of the witnesses was a Harriet WELLS, Elizabeth probably died in Fosdyke  1825. Jacob remarried in 1827 to Sophia HOLMES in Bicker, Lincolnshire 17-7-1827.
Jacob and Sarah had 11 children , 3 died in infancy. They emigrated to the US in 1846, and the associated baptisms in England and record of their arrival in US are known ( A separate posting gives the details)
The census entry of 1841 stipulates Jacob approx 40 was not born in Lincolnshire, the US census of 1850 details his age at 50. So a baptism circa 1791 seems reasonable.
It is very possibly that he is the son of the Jacob WELLS and Martha CLIFTON who married  24-11-1788 in Spalding Lincolnshire and had 2 girls baptised Martha in 1793 & 1794 in Donington in holland, but no children have been found between 1788 and 1792.
Apprentice indenture records are known from the following
2 July 1781 (unkown location ) for Daniel SHAYS for a staymaker apprentice Jacob WELLS
31 May 1788 Donington for Jacob WELLS for a tailor apprentice name Geo MORTON
9 May 1791 Chelmsford Essex for Jacob WELLS for a stay maker apprentice William HASLER
4 Jul 1796 Donington for Jacob WELLS for a stay maker apprentice Wm LILEE
19 Sep 1797 Donington Jacob WELLS for a stay maker apprentice Thos FOX
Therefore  I am are looking for possibilities of Jacobs baptism, probably in adjacent counties, but Essex is a possibility for the location of Jacob and Martha circa 1791. I have not entirely eliminated a connection with the WELLS family  found in Lyng Norfolk.
Are there any baptism records from Chelmsford or immediate area from the period 1788 - 1792 for a WELLS family that could tie in with the above
