Hong Kong - Dickie Family
« on: Sunday 12 November 06 16:34 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I am stuck as where to look for this family. Please can anyone help?
John Dickie b. 1859 Cumbrae, Buteshire, Scotland.
Emilia (Emily) b. c1869 China - his wife.
Frederick J. Dickie b. c1887 Hong Kong - son
James D. Dickie b. c1890 Hong Kong - son
They are on the 1891 Census in Greenock, Scotland, but John isn't there. Emilia  (Emily) is classed as married.
I don't know where he was or where the family went to after that.
How can I find if they went back to Hong Kong and can I find the births of the children?
Any help appreciated.
Regards,
Inchworm

Births of the children would be in the overseas birth indexes, I should think (these are online at www.1837online.com).  Possibly also the marriage of Dugald and Emilia.

Do you know Dugald's occupation?

There's a James Dugald Dickie on documentsonline, WWI medal roll.  'Royal Engineers Inland Water Transport', a Lieutenant.  Could this be James D?

Thank you for your help. I will try the overseas births at 1837.com
Yes, the James Dugald Dickie looks promising. I will check him out. All I had to go on was the 1891 Census in Scotland.
Thanks,

Have now found them on the 1901 Census in Scotland.
I have looked on the overseas Birth and Marriage Registers, but none of them are there.  :(
Does anyone know where I can go from here to find the Births in Hong Kong or the marriage.

Inchworm

Hmm... if they weren't registered with the UK authorities you'd have to attempt to find local records, maybe try contacting here?
http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/address_5_1.htm

From the 1901 census, is the occupation given of the father? Some occupations can lead you to other records - particularly if he was military or merchant seaman.

Did they have any more children in Scotland? That at least could help you find Emilia's maiden name.

His occupation was given as "Sugar Boiler" on his death in 1901 in Greenock, Scotland. I guess he worked in the local factory. His wife Emily or Emilia was b. c1869 in China and she died 1896 Greenock, Scotland. Her parents both had German sounding surnames. i.e Focken and Beisgel.
The 3 children are on the 1901 census in Greenock with Grandmother and without their father. They were b. roughly  between 1887-94.

Hi,

I have been starting to look up some of my family history and found this post for the Dickie Family in Hong Kong. My father Ronald John Dickie was born in Hong Kong 1922 I think. His Parents Frederick John Dickie who married Laura Ada Cowell - my grandparents. The name Fokken is also mentioned Emily Fokken was German and I think was the next generation back. I would be interested to know more and what you have found out and furthermore are you a relation?

many thanks
Jon Dickie

Yes, Emily Focken was born in China c1869 of German parents. She died in Greenock, Scotland. Her husband was John Dickie. They had Frederick John, James Dugald and John D. They may have been others, but that's all that I've found. These three children were all born In Hong Kong.
My Grt. Grandmother was Jane, the sister of John, who married Emily. Do you know what happened to James or John D.?   :)

A search here for "Dickie" shows the obituary of John Dickie on the front page(!) of the Hong Kong Telegraph in 1920 (he died in Scotland).  He had been in charge of the "Bowrington Refinery". It says "Mrs Dickie" predeceased him in 1897, and that he had three sons - one being Mr F.J. Dickie of Dodwell and Co, the others Mr J D Dickie (on his way to the colony) and Mr John Dickie (on his way to East Africa). All the sons served in WWI.

Could this be John's death in Canada?
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FLB5-4Q9
 - middle name "Bowrington" matches up with where his father worked.
