It seems to me to be clear from the birth registrations and baptisms that William born 1874 was Rebecca's younger brother - the Haughley baptism after his father's death confirms his age and parentage.  He was not on the 1871 census because he hadn't been born yet.

I don't agree that you are no closer to finding Bonnie.  A number of avenues for further research have been identified - for example, by ordering Eric's consular birth certificate you could identify his mother's full name and maiden name, which would help enormously.  Furthermore, the link to the Government Telegraphic Department (if confirmed on Eric's birth certificate as Willie's occupation) may be a crucial clue in tracing Willie's life and career - their archives are kept at the British Library.  It may even be (I don't know) that individual personnel files survive; if there is one for Willie it might name his wife & children.

We shall take a look at ordering Eric's Birth Certificate and take things from there. We do wonder if this Vivian is Bonnie - although this is only a guess - if correct it would mean that Vivian is 9 years older than my grandmother.

Vivian can't be Bonnie because Vivian died at 1 month old.  What is needed is a remarriage for William after his first wife Esther died in 1898 as a result of giving birth to Vivian.  A remarriage for him is not easily to be found in India, so he may have moved elsewhere at that stage.

Do let us know when Eric's birth certificate arrives :)

Yes, my apologies - there's so much information to take in I got confused. However we have begun the process of ordering the certificate so hopefully that will help us find the information we need.

The index is hard to read, but there appears to also be a possible consular marriage entry:

1901-1905 index
William Carter, Cairo, Vol 11 page 610

Another source would be to see if you can spot William, Dolly, Eric and/or Bonnie coming back to the UK at some point on incoming passenger lists.

Yes - good thinking. Spouse may be Bertha Ceize or Kathleen Agnes C Stevens, both of whose index details match.

The other male with those details is Ernest Cotton Fischer which may help with elimination of one bride.

Ernest Cotton Fischer later travels with his wife Kathleen Agnes.

I don't know how you have managed to find all of this but thank you very much. As well as the birth  certificate my father will order this marriage one too - hopefully these two certs will answer a lot of questions and of course I will post the findings on here once they arrive.
