Shaw family from Balgown, Laggan
« on: Sunday 14 December 14 19:07 GMT (UK) »
I have found that my Shaw realtions were living at Balgown, Laggan for a time in 1912.  Is anyone able to tell me if Balgown is an area, or is it a house name?  Thanks.

Hi Scotsquinne

If you google BALGOWAN, Laggan you will find more info on it. A modern description here www.countrylife.co.uk/property/uk/properties/4664593/sales as it looks like there has been developments for the holiday industry for the area.

SQ,  the Laggan Community website,  http://laggan.com/index.html

The Heritage Society might be of help, Balgowan, mainly crofts, had also the parish poorhouse, very small-now a house.
The "gowan" part means "smith" so it must have had a smiddy at one time.

Skoosh.
