Hi, SussanafromOZ, this is a possible for Charles Cullen in 1871
With his mother Bridget born Ireland and sister Ellen aged 11 born Ashton under Lyne. It shows Charles as born Ireland as a Cotton Piecer the age matches. Although it does show Charles as also born Ireland this could be an enumerator mistake or Charles thought he was born in Ashton.
Interesting that this sister named Ellen and named a daughter Ellen.
Reference: Piece 4072, Folio 133, Page 5. They are in Cross Court
 in Ashton under Lyne.

Hi, SussanahinOZ, I see Charles and Margaret on the 1901 census as boarders in the house of Richard Longsden and his wife Mary Agnes. This couple have a 10 month old son Thomas and a stepson named Joseph Macdonald. Reference: Piece 3785, Folio, 104, Page 25.
There is a marriage for a Mary Agnes Macdonald and Richard Longsden in the December quarter of 1899, Ashton, Reference: 8d 785.  So, it seems that Joseph is a child of Mary Agnes, pre marriage to Richard. It is possible that Mary Agnes and Margaret are related, possibly sisters?
If they are, this further supports the findings of Heatherjulie in that Margaret's maiden name was Macdonald or McDonald.
Modified: On  further examination it appears that this Mary Agnes is in fact the daughter of Margaret Macdonald.  I cannot find a marriage for Margaret and Charles. However, I suggest that you look at the 1911 census at the years married for this couple and the number of children of the marriage.

Kathb

Hi Kathb

So do you think that Margaret Cullen was Margaret McDonald .
So if Charles came from Ireland how do I find out where in Ireland?
Maybe Charles and Margaret never married...What are your thoughts...I am lost with all of this.

Hi Suzanna. Margaret's birth name appears to be Mac/MacDonald. It seems that her eldest child Mary Agnes, continues to use this last name until her marriage Charles and James were registered with the last name McDonald but then start to use the last name Cullen. The youngest child Ellen is registered with the last name Cullen. I would say that it is highly likely that Charles Cullen was the father of the three youngest children, but not Mary Agnes. The Charles Cullen I found on the 1871 is a possibility as 'your' Charles. The only discrepancy is that on this census it says born in Ireland and on all subsequent census Charles says born in Ashton. As I said earlier, the Ireland could be a mistake. Heatherjulie in a previous reply found a birth in Ashton for a Charles Cullen. I think it is much more likely that Charles was born in Ashton. I could not find a marriage for Charles and Margaret, perhaps they never did marry.

I don't think Margaret was previously married, as this looks to be her in 1871 in Hurst, Ashton (mother's name fits wit Margaret's daughter)

Agnes McDonald    36
Mary McDonald    12
Henry McDonald    8
Elenor McDonald    5
