Title: Records for Hatters
Post by: Katessanna on Monday 18 April 05 19:19 BST (UK)
Does anyone know where I can find apprentice (or other) records for a hatter?  His apprenticeship may have started in Oldham, Denton, or Sunderland sometime after 1846; he was certainly working as a hatter in  Sunderland in 1871.

Try Stockport museum of Hatting

Also our local archives have records of apprentices. Maybe if you contact the one for Oldham, Denton or Sunderland they may help you.

Happy Christmas Kate,

There were three Unions for Hatters.

The one for Relief of Strangers sounds interesting.

Hatters Mutual Association
Hatters Society of Great Britain and Ireland
Hatters Union for the Relief of Strangers

Hi Kate

Just wondered whether you had any luck with hatting records at all.  I have been trying to find apprenticeship records for hatters for a couple of years now.

My gt. grandafther x 3 was a hatter in York in the 1820s, and I believe it was a big hatting area at that time.

Hope you had much more luck than I did!

I have several hatters in my family but have never looked for apprentices as until the later 1800's it was very much a Cottage Industry.
There are some wonderul pictures of Hatting on the Tameside local studies and archives site (I put Tameside in a search engine, then Libraries then the Local Studies and Archives) I know I could Bookmark it but I don't visit it often enough to do that.
