Skye - Neil MacLeod c 1825 & Christina MacLean c 1830
« on: Monday 01 July 13 20:18 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help out regarding the children of the above couple.

Neil MacLeod married Christina/Christy MacLean dau of William & Ann MacKinnon (if I have the correct person)?

I have not been able to find a marriage for the couple to date & I have a suspicion that there could have been 2 couples on the go with the same names - Not proven?

My reasoning for assuming there may have been 2 different families is the ages, birth locations etc. which have occured on different census records & the lack of births on IGI or SP.

To date I have 12 potential children from different/differing census records:

Ann c 1849
Donald c 1850
John c 1852
Murdoch c 1853
Roderick Gordon c 1853 = Robina Sinclair 1879 in Govan
Flora c 1859
Kenneth c 1859
Janet c 1859 (I don't think they were triplets, just how old they looked random guesses)
Ann c 1861
Peter 24 Aug 1864
Lachlan 03 Sep 1867
Mary c 1868

The death cert. I have for Christina MacLean is for Christy MacLeod married to Neil MacLeod 03 Jan 1891 with her parents (named above)

I cannot find a death cert. for Neil & wonder if anyone knows who his parents are?

I have the descendants of Roderick Gordon and wonder if there may have been a 2nd marriage with one or both Neil & Christina.

I am not convinced the death for Christina is correct nor am I convinced the kids are from both these people as Christina's father on her death cert. is William & there is no William in the list of potentials but there may have been a son William who died so not totally discounting just yet.

Any advance would be great.

Regards,

Annie.

Hiya,

7 of the children are born after 1855. Checking for their birth certificates on Scotland's People might help you establish if you have got 2 or more couples with the same name, as hopefully the parents date and place of marriage should be recorded.
Don't envy your task, sorting out Macleods on Skye  ;D

Hi Loobyloo,

The ones I'm really interested in are Roderick Gordon (no birth found) & father Neil (no marriage or death found).

As Roderick was the only one who seemed to have a "middle" name? coupled with the fact that I couldn't find a birth I tried him under MacLeod, MacLean & Gordon surnames to no avail.

I felt I'd tried every avenue & was hoping to find someone else searching that line.

Hi Annie and Loobyloo

As Loobyloo has suggested, checking the birth certs of children Peter and Lachlan born in the 1860s will hopefully let you confirm date and place of parents' marriage.

This is the family, including Roderick still at home in 1871?:

Niel McLeod 42, ploughman b. Kilmuir Inv.
Christy McLeod 40 b. Waternich, Duirinish
Rodth McLeod 17
Murdo McLeod 15
Janet McLeod 12
Peter McLeod 5
Lachlan McLeod 3
Address: Fasach, Duirinish, Inv.

From some online trees, brother Murdoch looks to have also headed off to work in the railways and lived in the Glasgow area (in the Govan area from at least 1881 it seems). He remarried on 6 Nov 1901, Govan to an Elizabeth Allan Hay. He gave his parents details as: Neil McLeod, formerly ploughman and Christy, maiden name McLean, (mother showing as deceased but not father Neil).

Same sources as above, Flora, sister's birth is showing as being on 15 Oct 1858 in Bracadale, Skye, Inverness-shire. She looks to have already been working away from home by 1871. Whilst her birth is not on familysearch, you should hopefully find it on SP. Sources included for Flora to her death in Glasgow on 6 Jan 1936. She married in Govan in 1881 to an Alexander McLean.

There were indeed triplets born to Neil and Christie  ;)

Flora, Marion and Janet were born over the days of 14 and 15 October in 1858 (long old labour it must have been). From the register page entry included for Marion and Janet (Flora must have been over the page!), it shows the individual entries for Marion on 14/10 and then Janet 15/10. Parents as you have, Neil, a grieve at Ose (where the family were still living in 1861) and Christina MacLean.

Marion died a couple of weeks later on 30 October 1858.

With the 1901 remarriage of Murdoch in Govan, we know that father Neil was still showing as alive. I think this is Neil below in 1901 from what we have, with daughter Janet having married a McSwan?

Neil Mclead 77, crofter b. Kilmuir
Janet Mcswan 45, daughter and crofter's wife b. Bracadale
Neil Mcswan 15 grandchild
Alexander Mcswan 12 grandchild
Christina Mcswan 6 grandchild
Effie Mcswan 4 grandchild

Address: 7 Crofter's House, Waternish, Duirinish

Might be good to check the death cert on SP for a Neil McLeod b. 1827, who died in 1916 in Duirinish, Inv.

Neil showed Snizort as his place of birth in 1861 didn't he? Have you been able to confirm Neil and Christie's 1851 entry? I thought the one below might be them.

1851:

Neil Mcleod 30 labourer
Chirsty Mcleod 26
Ann Mcleod 2
Malcolm Mcleod 16 brother
Address: Brac Stein, Waternish, Inv.

A big maybe until you are able to confirm, but hopeful for this family for Neil, from 1841:

Rodk Mcleod 40 agr. lab.
Niel Mcleod 15
Murdoch Mcleod 10
Malcolm Mcleod 5
Marion Mcleod 8
Address: Skeabost, Snizort, Inv.

Hi,

I havent checked any of the marriages it could be as I can't find a birth with a date yet. The 1st born potential child is 1848 so if census are to go by, long gap before 1st born from marriage date??????????

Nearly £7 on SP and no birth with that couple yet ???
