Paix Hole farm Slamannan
« on: Sunday 26 January 14 15:09 GMT (UK) »
I have been researching Thomas Aitken/ Agnes Downs in the Slamannan area. In an 1861 census, I found them at Paix Hole farm Slamannan. I have not seen this name anywhere else and I have been unable to find the farm by directly researching it. I have found farms by the name of Hole and Holeburnhouse. Could this be a mis-spelling or is there a farm by that name? I would appreciate any input on this.

Go to the National Library of Scotland maps website, click on "Series maps", then on the earlier Ordnance Survey 6 inch maps. Click on the option to view as a seamless map, find Slamannan, and you will see Paixhole between Avonbridge to the north east and the farm of Dalquhain to the west. If you move the sliding bar which merges it with the modern Google satellite map, you'll see that the farm buildings are still there on the B825, but Avonbridge has spread right up to it.

Hi Jim,

This family are on a distant branch of my family tree. Agnes Downs (1811-1864) and Thomas Aitken (1811?-1889)

1841: Agnes is at her parents' home (Nappyfaulds, Falkirk Parish) with her illegitimate child Robert
1842: Thomas and Agnes married in Slamannan
1851: Thomas and Agnes, with 5 children :: at Foggermountain, Muiravonside
1861: Thomas and Agnes, with 4 children :: at Paix hole, Slamannan
1864: Agnes died at Gowanbank, Torphicen
1871: Thomas, with son Thomas :: at Linn Mill Bridge, Torphicen
1881: Thomas, with son Thomas :: at Linn Mill Bridge, Torphicen
1889: Thomas died at Bulziondale Cottage, Parish of Slamannan

Agnes's parents (Joseph Downs and Lilias Gilchrist) were my g-g-g-g-grandparents.
