Marriage in Scotland
« on: Friday 24 October 14 10:21 BST (UK) »
Hello

I wonder if it would be cheeky to ask if someone would be able to look for a marriage of a

Mr Smith or Smyth to a Miss Courtney

All I know is they married in Glasgow in 1877, he was said to be 16.

Many thanks

John Smyth married a Susan Mary Courtenay, Blackfriars, Glasgow in 1877

Have you got anymore info on the couple?

Hi Gadget

Thanks for that, since I posted the plea I have been having another search and have only just found another piece of info.  her name was indeed Susan Mary, I found them in the Petty Sessions.
Her father was a Magistrate but none of the articles actually give his first name, does it give his name on the marriage information please?
I would like to find out more to see if they are connected to my own family there.
I have looked on the 1901 Irish census but no-one appears to spring up as him or her if she was still married.
Blackfriars is that the place of the famous little dog?  It rings a bell.
Thank you very much.
Kind regards

Greyfriars Bobby , in Edinburgh , and also the name of a Pub.

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ - the marriage certificate should name both sets of parent , and give their ages.

Names of both parents will be listed on the marriage certificate which is availble (pay per view) on Scotland's People website after you are registered and purchase credits.

I have looked on the 1901 Irish census but no-one appears to spring up as him or her if she was still married.
Why are you looking for them in Ireland in 1901? The logical steps would be to start the search in Scotland after their marriage, so 1881, 1891, 1901 Scottish census (as well as 1911 Scottish census only available on Scotland's People).
There is a John Smyth with wife Susan in 1881 census at Blackfriar's Glasgow but if this is the correct couple there are children born before that 1877 marriage.

Blackfriars is that the place of the famous little dog?  It rings a bell.
You must be thinking of Greyfriar's Bobby in Edinburgh.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Cranstone

I looked at the index only. To view the certificate is another 5 credits.

You say you found them in the Petty Sessions - which Petty Sessions and where?

Where is there and who are your family?

Added - There is an online tree which looks very like Susan Mary . It gives her parents as James Lefroy Courtenay and Martha Frances Fox.

From Gadget's info, I haven't seen the tree that you have Gadget, but there is this info, just from the names you mentioned:

COURTENAY, William George, Esq., of
Glenbnrn, co. Londonderry.

Son of James Courtenay, Esq., J.P., of Glenburn, who
d. 1883, by Martha Frances, dau. of the late Richard
Fox, Esq., of Coolegad, co. Wieklow; b. 1840.— G^cn-
burn, near Portglenone.

Justice of the Peace, does this fit with the profile you are looking for with Susan's father being a Magistrate?

As Gadget has said, would be good to know why you are trying to connect to this couple.

Hello cranstone,
Like 'aghadowey' I wondered why you were searching the Irish Census when they married in Scotland!
Several John Smyth/Smiths with wife Susan on 1901 Scotland Census. John's occupation, which will be included on his Marriage Certificate, would be helpful.
               Regards,     Dod.

Sorry, I meant 1881 Scotland Census. The 1st Census after their marriage.

Hi again

I have found a baptism for a Susan Mary Courtney in 1862, Co Wicklow

This would make her circa 15 when she married.
