byshire Resources & Offers / North Derbyshire 1708-55 - GRANT

Is there any mention in the Clegg Diary of either William or Michael Grant?

Michael Grant was born in 1732 in Chinley and his father William was baptised in 1687 in Chapel-en-le-Frith.    However William was on the move quite a lot, living in Walton in the early 1700's.  We know from a Settlement Certificate from Clowne in 1762 that Michael was a labourer born in Chinley with his father's legal settlement being Walton.

There does seem to be some disease which hit the family in Walton in 1730 when William's wife Hannah died and so did her daughter Ann two months later.   It then appears that William left Walton for a number of years, married Jane in Peak Forest in 1732 which union was followed 5 months later by the birth of Michael in Chinley.

      Regards Malcolm

I think it may be useful for others to know that we have found several mentions of William and a couple of Michael Grant in the Rev. James Clegg's Diaries.    Whilst this page https://archive.org/details/extractsfromdiar00clegiala has a couple of them, these are not the whole diary and someone in Derbyshire Records has found more including the shaming of William in October 1732 before the whole of the congregation and the baptism the same day of Michael Grant.   We have also found William and his mother Eleanor in a list of people who were approached for subscriptions for the building of the new Chapel at Chinley in 1711.
