Two birth registrations are listed on Ancestry in 1843 in Stockport, but only one on FreeBMD: have you checked the images to see whether one is a mistranscription?

The 2 entries on Ancestry are denoted as April qtr - everbody else uses the month at the end of the quarter, so it should be June!.

The 214 entry is a mistake - the page is very blurred, and has been transcribed as both 214 AND 249!

Hi

I have just been trying to look at this but took ages loading etc. Yes you are right. I never tho' to check out whether it was one & the same  :-[

Yippee now I can finally order birth certificate and hope it is right one.

Although it doesn't explain the "2" I found on Free BMD Mother's maiden name was 1) Ashton & 2) Grimshaw?

Regards Pam

 Hi

That is really helpful :)

I know his father was John so it rules out James & Amelia.

I wonder why there is only one entry in the GRO though. Maybe it has been missed off. Think I'll take a chance and send for that birth anyway.

Thanks for all your help.

Regards
Pam

If it was John and Martha who married in Cheadle there is another possible child James baptised 2.9.1838 Cheadle

Hi

That ties in nicely with John's son John who married Helena Cambridges as James is a witness at, I presume, his brother's wedding?

I def think we are on the right track.
