Hi Darren,

the letter tells you, that Altenberg used to be Altenburg in the 19th Century (absolutely nothing to do with old person mountain)The area was in 1838  catholic  and you could write to the archive in Augsburg.. I think the better way is to go to an Latter Day Saints Family History Center and order the film for Altenburg. It does not cost much and you can go back a few generation. If you write to the archive without
knowing exact dates they have to search and it costs quite a lot.
If your ancestors against all odds should have been protestants you should write to the Evang.-Luth. Pfarramt (address given in the letter).

Ev ANGELISCH - LUTHERISCHEN KIRCHE INBAYERN

dont think we have a Latter Saints Family History centre here bit will investigate it, thanks for the translation

Yes that's the place. When you get the film you have to learn some basic phrases of German used in the "Kirchenbücher". Plenty of help available here on rootschat.
Sorry I did not realize you had written to the Evang. Luth. Archives. The charges are about the same for both.
