Portrack Lane, Stockton
« on: Thursday 05 February 09 17:26 GMT (UK) »
I received a death certificate today for my great grandmother. She died in 1939 at 50 Portrack Lane, Stockton, though her usual address was 33, Moses Street. When I searched on Multimap for 50 Portrack Lane, it seems to be a fairly large property, standing by itself at a junction of what seems to be two roads, both named Portrack Lane. One of these is a main road and I am thinking that the smaller one would have been the original.

What I am wondering is whether any Stockton experts know if there was a hospital or workhouse on this road. My mother believed that her granny ( the above gg) died in the workhouse but the address on the certificate doesn't give any further information.

Any ideas?

Jen

Hello Jen. It was known as Stockton Union Workhouse on the 1897 map of Stockton.
I knew it by the name Of St Annes in the 1950's.
Of course all that area came down in the slum clearance years.

Adam,

I don't suppose you know the most likely place for a burial for someone who died there?

Yes,  it would be the "Durham road Cemetery.
I would think you could get some information if you go to the Stockton on Tees web site.
Just noticed that there are 250 inscriptions on line . You might be lucky
Just type in Durham road cemetery.

They could also be buried at Oxbridge Lane Cemetery.

Both cemeteries have an online index here

Wey hey! That's fantastic, thank you Jay. I have found my great granny's record, so now I just need a plot number and the time to go to Stockton!

Cheers,

Jen
