Fairhurst/Laws/Straughan
« on: Friday 24 October 14 09:39 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am trying to find some more information about this couple:

John Straughan & Alice Fairhurst.

Alice Fairhurst married John William Laws in Houghton in 1907.
She was obviously widowed between 1907 and 1919 as she married John Straughan in Houghton during the December quarter of 1919, as Alice Laws.
The pair had three children(*):
son b. 1920
son b.  1923
daughter b. 1928
Mother's maiden name given as 'Fairhurst' for all children.

I think Alice may have died in 1946 - age given as 61 years, which would make her year of birth around 1885.

She seems not to have moved away from Houghton between marriages (I'm just guessing though, due to the fact that both marriages took place there), but cannot find her on the 1911 census, when she would have been Alice Laws.

Can anybody find her on this census? It may just give me a clue as to where she was born.

Thanks

Sue

Have you got her fathers name from either of the marriages?

There's an Alice age 7 in 1891 daughter of Matthew and Martha Fairhurst.
Born Trimdon Durham living Whitworth Durham with parents/siblings.

I don't know where those places are in relation to Houghton but will keep looking for her.

Think I see her in 1911 under "Lows"

She is the one born Trimdon  :)

Closest death for first husband I can see is

Mar 1919 Tynemouth

John W O Laws age 32

Fits with age 24 on the 1911

PS There's a child from first marriage John William born Penshaw Durham in 1909.
Possibly another born 1912 George H.

1891 for info

Matthew Fairhurst 38 coal miner born Wigan
Martha 28 born Shropshire - all children born in Durham
William 5
James 2
Matthew 7 months
Annie 8
Alice 7
Emily 4

By 1901 there are 5 more children - Florence 9 - Walter 7 - Noah 5 - Catharine 3 - Martha 1
And 3 more by 1911 - Jane 9 - Frank 8 - Robert 7

Not sure about 1901 for Alice but there is an Alice Farclough age 16 born Trimdon servant with the Birch family in Hetton le Hole.  Maybe they misheard her name.

Thanks so much for all your help!

It would seem that Alice has been identified, although I still may need to buy her marriage certificate to John Straughan to find out more about him, as he, I very much suspect, may have been widowed too.
