South Australia Death lookup - Griffey
« on: Tuesday 22 October 13 13:08 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

I am pretty green when it comes to South Australian Research and was wondering if a Rootschatter could help out with a death lookup for me.

I am trying to find details on the death of Richard Griffey (b. 1808 Devonshire) who I believe died in 1885 in Adelaide.

In the Genealogy SA website (http://www.genealogysa.org.au) database search there is an entry in the death index for a:

Richard Griffey - year 1885, reg 148/12, district Adelaide

And Ancestry confirms this with the following entry:

Australia Death Index, 1787-1985
Name: Richard Griffey
Death Date: 20 Jul 1885
Death Place: Adelaide
Age:    77
Residence Place: Adelaide
Registration Place: Adelaide, South Australia
Page Number: 12
Volume Number: 148
Estimated Birth Year:    abt 1808

I would love to know what the details are on the certificate and I understand from State Library of South Australia that deaths of this period are covered in an index with the following details:

1842-1972
Compulsory Civil Registration started in 1842. Death Indexes compiled by the South Australian Genealogy Society are available on CD ROM on the PCs in the Spence Wing, for the date ranges 1842 to 1915 and 1916 to 1972. These include the surname of the deceased, the given names, gender, age, marital status, residence, date and place of death, relative's given names, surname and relationship to the deceased. These CD ROMs can only be searched onsite. Click here to arrange a booking.

Is anyone able to look this index up for me? Or is this the same detail covered in the Ancestry entry?

How much does it cost to buy a certificate in SA? I would love to know what he died from and what he was doing in SA  ;)

The cd has only these basic details. Early SA death certificates don't have any other useful info.

Richard GRIFFEY aged 77 d. 20.07.1885
Status not recorded
Relative: (not recorded)
Residence and Death Place was Adelaide
Ade/ 148/12

The Biographical Index SA has this entry. (BISA not always accurate)
GRIFFEY Richard b: c1808 ENG d: after 1885
arr: 1861 from VIC 0cc: Seaman res: Adelaide rel: C/E

JenClark,

It looks like a death certificate costs $44.75. Quite steep I think!  :P

But as Essie's post says, if early SA death certificates don't have any other useful information, then it may not be worth getting it!

Hey Ros, Essie & Chris,

Thanks for your replies guys :)

$44.75 does seem a bit steep doesn't it, particularly when there is not much info on the certificates...but the free transcription service for Adelaide looks like a winner! I think I will e-mail them and see what it says ;)

Thanks for the info from the BISA, it is looking more like him. He was a seaman and his sister Mary Jane Perrers (nee Griffey) had emigrated to South Australia in 1859, so he had a reason to head there in 1861. There is a group of Irish Griffey's in Adelaide, so I wanted to make sure he was my Devonshire Richard Griffey...looking good!

FYI
There are some GRIFFEY in Victoria at that time, but no "activity" is shown on the BMD indexes for Richard.

Hi Jenny

https://sphere.ocba.sa.gov.au/cgi-bin/fccgi.exe?w3exec=PrepApplic&w3ServerPool=bdmsa

This is the link to apply for a death certificate from SA Government records - cost about AUD$40 (not cheap).

I did a quick search in Trove (http://trove.nla.gov.au/) without success and also Australian Cemeteries (http://www.australiancemeteries.com/) without success.

Regards

Bob

Yes there are the volunteers at Goodwood library who will transcribe info from the local register and SA Genealogy research service but there is also this service - half the price of a certified certificate.

Mention of a R GRIFFEY in 1865 - there were a number of other GRIFFEYS in SA at the time but none with a given name commencing with an R.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0wk9/

An online tree states that Mary Jane GRIFFEY born c1820 died 15 April 1855 aged 34 years at Bideford - address Mills Street, Bideford and her husband remarried in 1856 to either another Mary Jane GRIFFEY/GRIFFEN or Mary PENNETANT before emigrating in 1859.  The Mary Jane PERRERS who died in SA was born c1814 according to her age at death in 1899.

I found this mistranscribed death on free bdm.

Thanks Cando, Bob and Sue  ;)

I will e-mail the Goodwood Library and see what they say first I think, but thanks for the other transcription link.

How intruiging about the 'Symbol S' or supplementary info....I wonder what it is!! Hopefully something interesting that will help me out  ;)

Thanks for the link to the newspaper article mentioning a voter named R Griffey in 1865, it could well be him.

As for the Perrers family, what I had is below:

Mary Jane Griffey - baptism 1 May 1814 to William Griffey & Elizabeth Clark
Mary Jane Griffey & Jonathon Marshall Collins Perrers - marriage Dec Q 1843 Bideford (vol 10, p79)

1851 census - Silver Street, Bideford, Devonshire

Jonathon M C Perrers Head M 29yrs Painter & Glazier b. Holworthy, Devon
Mary Jane Perrers Wife M 29yrs Wife of Painter & Glazier b. Bideford, Devon
Mary Louisa Perrers Dau 5yrs b. Bideford, Devon
William T Perrers Son 2yrs b. Holsworthy, Devon
Amelia Perrers Dau 1yr b. Holsworthy, Devon

So this Mary Jane appears to be born c. 1822, and so does Jonathon Marshall Collins Perrers (who was baptised 19 July 1821 Holsworthy Devon)

I had not seen the second marriage...so assumed that the age was mistranscribed as the shipping record showed:

http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/davidmcivor1859.shtml

David McIvor, 868 tons, Captain Robert Baillie, from Liverpool 27th August 1859, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 28th November 1859

General Emigrants
Perrers
Jonathan Marshall Collins Perrers 38yrs  Occ: Carpenter / Painter  Residence: Bideford, Devon
Mary Jane Perrers (Griffey) 43yrs
Mary Louisa Perrers 13yrs
William Tardrew Perrers 10yrs
Amelia Reb__lea_ Perrers 9yrs
Rickman Perrers   7yrs

So that put his wife Mary Jane Perrers (nee Griffey) as born c. 1816, which was a much better match

and her death in SA:

Mary Jane Perrers
Died: 12 Nov 1899
Place: Adelaide
Age:    85yrs (b abt 1814)
Residence: Adelaide
Registered: Adelaide, South Australia (Page 293, Vol 265)

Confirmed in the newspaper:

Newspaper article: The Advertiser, Saturday 18 November 1899
PERRERS--On the 13th November, at Brown street, Adelaide, Mary Jane, dearly-beloved wife of John Marshall C. Perrers, aged 85 years.

Which seemed to fit nicely.............

But perhaps she was his second wife and not the mother of his children, who are all born pre-1855? As per the second marriage..

Mary Jane Griffey & Marshall Perrers - Sept Q1856 Bideford (Vol 5b, p905)

What are the chances of someone marrying two women of the same name  :o

I guess that the first Mary Jane Griffey may be a relative and perhaps the second came to assist with the children when his first wife died and they eventually married?? Though I haven't got any other Mary Jane's of the right age in the tree....curious!

Actually now that I think of it, there was a Mary Ann Griffey who is the right age listed with her parents in 1851 that I could not place....perhaps it is the second Mary Jane mistranscribed??

1841 census - Tower Street, Bideford Devon (HO 107 242 12)

William Griffey, age 50, plumber Y
Elizabeth Griffey age 50 Y
George Griffey age 30, painter Y
Mary Jane Griffey age 20, plain worker Y
James Griffey age 20, tin plate worker Y
William Griffey age 15, shoe maker apprentice Y
Thomas Griffey age 15, tailor apprentice Y
James Griffey age 50, mason Y

1851 census - HO107/1895/159 p 20 Tower Street, Bideford Devon

William GRIFFY Head M 67 M Plumber b Bideford Devon (deaf)
Elizabeth GRIFFY Wife M 68 F b Bideford Devon
Mary Ann GRIFFY Daur U 36 F Dau b Bideford Devon

Perhaps I will try to have Mary Jane Perrers death certificate transcribed as well...it may have a clue!
