Lost Souls in the USA - please help if you can.
« on: Tuesday 22 July 14 17:31 BST (UK) »
Hi,I'm looking for help please.

In our family we have a few lost souls in the US over the years, where we've been really struggling to find useful information about them or access US records, so any help would be appreciated on the following:

1. Alice (Mary) Howell - Looking for any immigration/death/burial/obit records

Born around August 1870 in UK (to James and Alice Howell), and is on April 1871 UK census, but her parents moved the family to USA in around April to August 1871.

She died at some point in the US (a letter refers to her having been ‘left behind’ in Kansas), between April/August 1871 and early 1875.

Other references (to relations out in US with them) would indicated that they have been in the Lawrence area of Kansas.
-------------------------

2. Juliett Harriet Annie Howell (sister to above) – Looking for any birth/baptism/emigration records.

Born  early 1873 in the US (all later UK censuses just refer to US,  not to a state)

She returned with family to UK sometime between early 1873 and early 1875.
-----------------

3. Thomas (or James Thomas) Finn – Looking for any immigration/marriage/children/death/obit records

He was born c. 1849 in Kent, England.

We know that he moved to US sometime after 1870.

He married a lady called Emma Test (though spelling not 100% sure on Test) in Chicago in April 1892, but died there in 1893.

4.Emma Test – Looking for any child/marriage records.

We think she was born c. 1856  in Indiana or Kentucky

She is shown on 1900 and 1910 censuses in Chicago, and we think she died c.1913.

We're looking to find out if he’d been married before her, if they/she had kids (we believe a son aged 18  is shown on 1900 census, but if he is a son he predates their marriage)

We have been trying to get some information on these family members for such a long time now so we would be very grateful for any information that might be found.

Thanks very much.

Barbara.

Possible death record for Emma Finn - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N7NZ-LBZ

The 1910 census for Emma says she has one child, but the column that is supposed to indicate the number of children living is blank.

If I am looking at the correct 1910 census:
Chicago Ward 2, 1910
Emma T(?) Finn, servant, age 52, years married 28, born Kentucky, parents born Indiana; Cook, Private Family.  It appears that in the marital status column she is shown as Married, maybe Married 1 (one time).  As Shelly mentioned: 1 child born, column of children living is blank.

She was living in the household of Mr. and Mrs. Tansill(?).  Indiana Avenue, No. 2916
Ellison: Co. Wicklow/Canada       Fowley: Sligo/Canada       Furnival: Lancashire/Canada       Ibbotson: Sheffield/Canada       Lee/DeJongh: Lancashire & Cheshire       Mumford: Essex/Canada       Ovens: Ireland/Canada       Sarge: Yorkshire/Canada             Stuart: Sligo/Canada       Sullivan: Co. Clare/Canada      Vaus: Sussex/Surrey      Wakefield: Tuam or Ballinasloe, Ireland              (Surname: Originated/Place Last Lived)  (Canadians lived in Ontario)

1900 Chicago Ward 05 Census
Harry Finn, born March 1882, single, born Indiana as were parents.  Bridgeworker

Emma's birthplace is Indiana as were her parents.  Her marital status is 19 years, with a possible slash through the 19.  It looks like it could be Wd, rather than M in the married/widowed column.  She was born December 1856.

Harry Finn, born March 1882, single, born Indiana as were parents.

Possibly birth?
Harry T Henry, born 5 March 1882, Knox County, Indiana.  Mother: Emma E Terrell

Update:  This record won't work - where does the surname Test fit in?   :-\

The Family History Library has cemetery records for the cemetery where Alice Howell may have been buried:  https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/423110#/423110?availability=Family%20History%20Library  You may be able to request a copy of the internment card through their photoduplication service.  https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Photoduplication_Services

If you don't already have a copy of the death records for Emma, Harry, & Thomas Finn, you may want to request them through there, also.  Seeing the actual record may yield some other clues.
