High street, Buchanhaven, Peterhead
« on: Sunday 19 December 10 13:22 GMT (UK) »
Hope there is someone who can help……………….. :) :) :)
Doing my family research, I’ve become aware of a number of my ancestors lived in and around High street, Buchanhaven, Peterhead. Is there anyway of finding out the history of these buildings and would the numbers on the houses today be the same in days gone by.
McLean, Buchan, Bruce, Buchanhaven, Peterhead and Scotland.

Number 5, has a date stone above the door "G.B. 1880"
Number 29, has "J.B. 1882".
The cottages all look to date from around that time, with the exception of a couple that are set back from the road, which look more modern. No. 5 is the third cottage on the left, which is the accepted way of numbering the street, I can't think of a reason why it would have changed since 1880. Also, the older house is lower numbered. Nos. 2 and 24 has been demolished.

Thank you for your interest. Timescale is 1870s to 1920s approx. Also properties appear to have been heavily refurbished, when was this?

The next revision of the map is 1907, published 1910, shows very little additional development around the three previously mentioned streets. Most of the development that we see on the modern maps must come after this date.
I'm not from this area, I used g**gle street map, so I would be guessing at the refurbishment dates. If pushed I would say the majority of the houses had the upper levels added less than 25 years ago (certainly after the 1920's). Perhaps someone local could answer that one.

Even as late as 1930, the development is still centred on the same three streets.

If you are researching Bruce and Buchans in Buchanhaven, then we have a connection.  They originally came from St.Combs Lonmay approx 1814 and Corskelly Lonmay before that.

Let me know the names you are research.  Do you know the by-names of your Buchan's and Bruce's?

Number 5, has a date stone above the door "G.B. 1880"
Number 29, has "J.B. 1882".

No.5 G.B. = George Bruce "Jordan"

In the 1880's Strachan's were actually living at those addresses.

The houses were "But and Ben", upstairs rooms/lofts converted in later years.
