Confusion concerning Thomas Hodgson
« on: Wednesday 24 September 14 16:35 BST (UK) »
Hello

Joseph Yeowart Hodgson was born in 1905 to Thomas Hodgson and Ellen Yeowart

Thomas Hodgson was born in 1877 in Oughterside

Looking at the census, I am confused over the identity of his parents

Whom were they? There are two possibilities for him in the 1901 census. Thomas Hodgson born in Hayton and living in Oughterside. This could be him, but his occupation is listed as postman, not signalman as it is in 1911

Head   Jane Steel   75
Grandson   Thomas Hodgson   24

Then there is the second possibility. Thomas Hodgson born in Caldbeck

Head   William Hodgson   77
Wife   Margaret Hodgson   65
Daughter   Margaret A Hodgson   38
Son   Thomas Hodgson   24

Any help in clearing up the confusion would be appreciated

Looks like you need the birth certificate to know for certain who his parents are.

It is likely a William Hodgson, because there is a William Hodgson on the second census possibility and in an earlier census, there is a William Hodgson, son of George and Jane Steel, Thomas is living with them and is listed as their grandson

William is listed as their son, but i think the birth year is an error

Don't think this is the Thomas you are looking for.

This family appear together on 1881/1891/1901 census as a family unit. William married Margaret Varah at Wigton March 1863 - 10b 598

If you check family search, it gives the birth of Thomas Hodgson - 24 June 1877 Caldbeck to William Hodgson and Margaret.

1881 census (Class: RG11; Piece: 5179; Folio: 72; Page: 13) is free to look up, so I'll leave you that pleasure! ;D

George & Jane Steel, with grandchildren Tom and Mary Jane as in 1891.
Plus son William Hodgson, 18, a Blacksmith.

thank you

It is interesting that the Steels are the grandparents of Thomas Hodgson, that would make them the fourth Steele lineage in my family

Looking at the 1881, there are all there, including Thomas. The only thing that confuses me is that William Hodgson is listed as a son of George and Jane Steel, but he is too young to be Thomas's father, if the ages are to be believed, he would be 14 at the time of thomas's birth, which cannot be right

There is a marriage 1865 where George Steel and Jane Hodgson are on the same page.
Perhaps William is Jane's son and Thomas is the child of another Hodgson.
