no - haven't checked that one.  James Loney (not John - oops) and Ellen O'Donnell to the one you list seems like a bit of a stretch.

Also - is there anywhere else I could be checking other than Scotlandspeople.  Everytime I need to check a document it costs me 1-5 credits.

Hi,

Hugh Loney, male
b. February 24th 1895 @ Waterloo, Hillhead, Kirkintilloch
parents - James Loney, coal miner and Helen Loney m.s. O'Donnell
married January 1st 1893 Bellshill
reg James Loney (March 7th 1895 @ Kirkintilloch)

:-\ I can't see a marriage on SP with those names though! It may be worth looking at his siblings' birth registrations to see what marriage date etc is given there.

All appear on SP as:

Agnes Loney, 1894
James Loney, 1899
Patrick Loney, 1901

all reg Kirkintilloch

Thanks Hume:

What does reg James Loney (March 7th 1895 @ Kirkintilloch) mean?

And where did you find this info?

Hi Gazza,

sancti is correct; James registered his son's birth on March 7th 1895 at Kirkintilloch.

Did you manage to find any more details from his siblings' birth registrations?

I've been maxed over the last few weeks so haven't had much time to investigate further.

One anomaly that cropped up though was the death of Hugh Loney.  I was told by a family member that Hugh died in the very late 1940's or early 1950s.  Probably early 1950s though (where he would have been ~55 yrs old).  However, on Scotlandspeople, there are only 2 deaths listed for Hugh Loney's during that period.  One died in 1940 (b~1895) and the other died in 1953, but he was born in 1907.

I know that Hugh's son was serving in Burma in the late 1940s/early 50s, and it was during that time that is father Hugh died...  Therein lies the conundrum.

Hi there,

It does appear that Hugh died a while earlier than you and the family thought. The Hugh Loney who died in 1940 is indeed your man.

Hugh Loney, aged 45, general labourer (married to Mary Connell Petrie or Mirrilees)
d. September 10th 1940 @ 26 George Street, Glasgow
parents - James Loney, coal miner (dec.) and Helen Loney m.s. O'Donnell
death registered by Mary Loney, widow (September 10th 1940 @ Glasgow)

Looks like father James may have died 1915, aged 48 in Campsie, Stirlingshire, and Mary (widow) 1977 in Glasgow, aged 82.

interesting.  I stumbled across a scottish mining web page that mentioned a mining accident in 1938 in which all survived but where a Hugh Loney suffered from fumes, and he was quite an elderly man - not sure if 43 years old would be considered elderly in 1938!.  I wonder if that was him, and he died 2 years later possibly related to the incident - although you mentioned his job was general labourer...
