Western Necropolist Glasgow
« on: Tuesday 01 July 14 19:28 BST (UK) »
Hello

My grandmother bought a lair in 1944 - in perpeturity it says on the notice I have. So far 3 of the family have been buried there.
It is in the old part up on the hill and many graves there are 19th century, no longer defined, and are just grass areas with many fallen stones.
Can anyone tell me if you are still allowed to be buried in that part, or is only the newer part still used for this?

Hi pindtome

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Hopefully someone here will know. If not, look at the bottom of the page on this link and make enquiries there - www.glasgow.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=5157

Hi pindtome,

Welcome from me too.

I believe that if there is still available space within the lair(s) then yes, a further burial could be carried out, or the interment of ashes. It depends on how many lairs were specified at the time of purchase - some only contain 3 whilst others (much deeper, or double/side-by-side ones) can hold much more. There is however almost always space for ashes to be buried.

The only way to find out is to make enquiries to Glasgow City Council (following the link Monica posted) and if you can supply exact details, they should be able to advise you.

Anne  :)
