Kyle graveyard,portlaoise, co,laois
« on: Tuesday 16 October 12 07:56 BST (UK) »
Hi, been trying to find records or info re Kyle graveyard in Portlaoise ,co laois, or the old name of Kyle graveyard in kilcolmbane, queens county, not to be confused with Kyle graveyard in Borris in Ossory. The Cassan family are interred there from the 1700s, they were french huguenots who received land from the british for their help in the old wars,My great grt grandfather James Fitzpatrick was also buried there in 1885 and his Son John in 1910,I expect there wives also are interred there. The cassans were my ancestors landlords, Matthew s Cassan was one of them ,his great grand son was a John sheffield cassan, an actor who played the part of Boy in Tarzan..
Sadly the graveyard is a ruin now and a lot of grave stones have fallen and are part buried or un readable.. Any help would be great

Hi, I think that is a different Kyle graveyard, the kyle I refer to is near sheffield cross, which is an intersection off the Timahoe  rd,ballyroan rd,portlaoise rd and doad to broomfield cross, It is up a near treacherous rd which is tough to drive on.Kilcolmbane is the old name for the district where kyle is along with capoley and ballycarnan.

Thanks John

This is the grave yard described in the post above - it's in Kyle townland, which is in Abbeyleix civil parish, in the barony of Clarmallagh.

See : Kyle graveyard

There are about four other townlands named Kyle in Co. Laois, in the following civil parishes - Fossy (aka Timahoe), Erke, Rearymore and one in the parish of Kyle.

...

There's a townland named Ballycarnan about 6km south of Port Laoise. This townland is in the civil parish of Kilcolmanbane.

There's a townland named Cappoley in the same parish. No townland named Kyle or similar that I see in the parish...

Hi,
Thanks again,Kyle is the only name I know for the area, the graveyard I refer too is in Kilcolmbane, the cassans are interred there from the 1700s or before, they are interred in a derelict church,The last person interred there was a Tom Hargroves in I think 1985.It was the site of an old church, there are flat graves covered within the footprint of the church which holds the graves of the cassans and some others, only one grave remains to be kept by locals,I saw flowers there when I was in Portlaoise. The land surrounding the grave is owned by a local farmer a Mr Frank Kealey, originally owned I think by Hargroves. My father found the fitzpatrick stone 2o yrs ago but it must have been knocked down by cattle who had the run of the site for a while although now it is fenced off..

Cheers John

There's an old graveyard in the townland of Kilcolmanbane, in the parish of the same name. There's no name other than the townland - but this might be the one being referred to.

Graveyard Kilcolmanbane civil parish   (OSI Map - c1890)

Google map to the location - it looks like the old graveyard is amongst the group of trees just south of the road.

Port Laoise to Kilcolmanbane Graveyard   (Google maps)

The adjacent church is marked as ruins back as far as the 1830s at least.

One of the names listed for the townland on Griffith's is a Matth. S. Cassan esq., as occupier of Land & Plantation of 72 acres, and as lessor of a house. He seems to have lived elsewhere as he had no residence in Kilcolmanbane townland.

There's also a John Fitzpatrick listed with house, offices and land of just over 5 acres. The publication date for Griffith's in this area was the 23rd Oct. 1850
