Identify uniform, please

This is my great uncle Alexander Robertson Gray b 1881 in Airdrie. Does his uniform give any clues to what regiment he served in? Possibly the Royal Engineers?

He does not seem to have had any promotion from Private Soldier despite his maturity!

He may have been a tradesman recently conscripted into the army. Have you found him in 1901 and 1911?

I don't think he'd been in the army very long when the photo was taken.

He was an apprentice painter in 1901, Journeyman house painter in 1911. He may have been conscripted.  From the brief remarks on the back it seems that this photo and another of his younger brother were sent to my grandparents when the brothers went to war.   I haven't found service records for Alexander so far. There are other people with the same name, and not enough information for me to identify which, if any, is his.

The cap design would date the picture after Mar 1916.
