Help with Uniform
« on: Thursday 10 July 14 21:20 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me  identify this uniform.

The photograph was found in an old photo frame purchased from a antique/second hand shop.

I know that trying to find out the name of the person will be impossible, but it would be nice to know what regiment he may have served with.

Hi, he's more than likely Royal Engineers looking at the cap badge, but it's not too clear, could be mounted unit judging by the "Banolier" across his chest.

Regards
Frank.

Good evening,

I must learn to type faster, You beat me to it Frank but you are correct. He is in the Royal Engineers, and a driver by trade. That's horses not a vehicle.

 ;D

Hi John915, is that classed as a stiffener around the rim of the hat? if so I think that would date the photograph to about 1915, I could be wrong but remember reading it somewhere.

And again,

If you are looking at the original posted photo Frank, he has a waterproof cover on his hat.

Under it and on my piccy the caps both have there original stiffener around the edge. Usually taken out by the troops during the war years whilst on front line service. Dating by it is a little difficult because many troops returning to the UK would probably have had to replace them for duties here. Wouldn't have done to look scruffy at home.

On the back of the postcard in pencil is written 4585.  Do you think it maybe a service number ?

I've looked up the number on the Imperial War Museum site and found a Sapper Joseph H Coleman, British Army Royal Engineers Transport services.

I don't think for one minute my trace is correct...I know nothing about military history.
