Towcester Newspaper Articles - 1949
« on: Monday 03 February 14 19:47 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know where the best place to find newspaper articles from 1949 would be.  I'm trying to find a traffic accident report about  my Great Grandfather.

Hi.

I think you would have to trawl the papers at the N.R.O. or
the Northampton Library.

Are you able to narrow it down at all and say his name.

EDITED: I see you say you live in Northampton.  :)

I'm looking for an Edward John Major born in Helmdon in 1892 and died in 1949.  The story goes that he died after being knock off a bike by a lorry.

However, there is some confusion.

I cannot find a birth for him but can find a marriage to Betsey Hammond. There are also two deaths with the same reference, one being for a Walter Edward Major and one being for Edward John.  There is also a probate record for Walter Edward leaving money to Betsy Major.  There is a birth record that fits for Walter Edward

On my nan's marriage certificate and birth certificate he is named as Edward John.

I'm hoping that I can find a newspaper report which might match up all the dates and hopefully confirm or not whether they are in fact the same person.

It will be a long trawl through newspapers without a death date.
You should probably get the death certificate, it may say something like
Edward John MAJOR otherwise known as Walter Edward MAJOR.

There may have been a weekly paper for Towcester. Try contacting the Towcester library.

The death register for both Walter Edward and Edward John are March 1949 and the probate for walter edward has the death as 18 February 1949.

I will contact Towcester Library however to see what archives they have

Just to say Northampton Central Library is the only Library
in Northants that hold Historical Newspapers for the period
asked about.

Better to check it is open as it is often closed in Discover.

I'm in town on Wednesday so I shall pop in and have a look.

I know what you mean about Discover being closed.  I find it's often closed on a Saturday (which is the best day for me to go)

I have solved the mystery. It is the same person and he didn't know himself. I found a small article about his death and the inquest being adjourned. The people in the library were extremely helpful.
