Rev Angus J MacVicar
« on: Friday 08 February 08 22:23 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,
I'm looking for any genealogy files that would help me determine if this MacVicar family is connected to me.
I only know that the reverend's nickname from his children was THE PADRE. He was born about 1876 Scotland.
The Padre-Angus's father was also named Angus. I don't know his mother's name.
The Padre-Angus married Marjorie (Marsali) MacKenzie.
The Padre-Angus had a son named Angus born 1908 Duror, Southend, Scotland; he is a well known author and died Oct2001.
Other children of the Padre-Angus and Margaret are:
Archie born about 1911
Willie born about 1913
Rona born about 1917
Kenneth born about 1927
John unkown when born
If this family is connected to me, someone would have had to immigrate to Canada.
My earliest confirmed MacVicar/McVicar relative is:
John McVicar born Aug1834 Scotland died 13Jan1908 Gagetown, Michigan. The only information I have for his parents are the names-Angus McVicar and Ann(possibly McAly-or something like that).
John married Ann McDonald 31Mar1862 Ontario, Canada; Ann was born Dec1843 Scotland; died 07Feb1909 Fort William, Ontario, Canada.
Someone once sent me information stating John's wife and mother both had the maiden name MacDonald/McDonald.
If you can help with any information connecting the author Angus MacVicar to me, please contact me.
Thanx
Nannette

I am puzzled, the only Duror that I know (and can find on the map and in CANMORE) is just South of Kentallen.

There are several Southends but I can't see one around there.

That is the Southend that I would think of, so I was puzzled by the mention of Duror, unless it is just the name of a house.

John married Ann McDonald 31Mar1862 Ontario, Canada; Ann was born Dec1843 Scotland; died 07Feb1909 Fort William, Ontario, Canada.

The 1900 census shows that this couple immigrated to the US in 1884; their first American-born child was Mary b Michigan May 1885.

John was naturalized by 1901 - have you traced his naturalization papers?

Martin-
I know very little about Scotland, I can only tell you what I read in Angus's book "Salt in my Porridge" on page 17 he writes "She (referring to his mother) and I were alone together when I was born in Duror in October 1908." Then in the next paragrah he writes"When our parents came tot he Southend at the Mull of Kintyre, where five of us were born,........................."
I could have misunderstood what he was referencing. I know he was raised in the Manse; my understanding of that is-it is the house provided by the church.

Anna-
No, I have not  traced any papers yet. I don't know where to start or how to go about that.
Thanx, Nannette

Hi Nannetel,

Did you ever get a satisfactory response to this?

Angus McVicar (born 1908, author, etc) was my Grandfather's cousin (Angus MacAulay from North Uist / Fortingall) and I know he spent time (in his "youth!" and for later visits) in Canada visiting relatives, so if you need more information, I could probably ask around!

I know its an old post, so maybe you've got it all sorted....if so, I'd be keen to see if we connect!!  :-)
