John William Bevil
« on: Saturday 02 July 11 18:52 BST (UK) »
Please can anyone help me
I'm trying to find what happened to John William Bevil
He was born about 1790, possibly in Covent Garden, London.

He appears on the 1841 census, living at 2,St.Georges Place and Regents St., aged 40 occupation auctioneer
Can't find him on the 1851 census, nor can I find his death cert.
Has anyone ideas what I can do next ?
Thanks very much     Risey

The man in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire?  I was looking at the wrong Regent Street, after seeing Covent Garden named  ...  :-[

The name would lend itself to mistranscription or even original incorrect recording - have you tried searching with the wildcard features in FreeBMD / Ancestry / FindMyPast for his death?

Hello and welcome to Rootschat  ;D
There is a Will available for Ann Bevil of Gloucestershire  - Tobacconist - dated 11 Nov 1822, proved in 1852. She is shown as the  wife of John William Bevil.  It looks like John William Bevil may have still been alive when the Will was proved in 1852 as he swears his oath, so a death/burial later than 1852 for him. I still can't find him on the 1851 tho' !

I think n 1851 census Ann Williams is married daughter of Ann Bevil Lodger age 57 b Oxford

Strange thing Ann is described as "Married"

there is a death reg for Ann Bevil Jun qtr 1852 Clifton
Maybe her?

There is a death reg Jhn William Bovell Dec qtr 1847 Glouc 11 267

None of it "sits well" together though??

Aha.. the Will of Ann Bevil reads almost like a 'prenuptial agreement'  Perhaps she was safe-guarding her assets. Her death in 1852 would fit with the Will dates.  The Will was proved 10 July 1852 in London and states -  'and surrogate by the oath of John William Bevil the husband and the sole executor'  so perhaps he was no longer around if the oath is 'surrogate' ?  it then goes on to mention an Indenture Settlement made in November 1824

In 1828 the papers report the bankruptcy of a John William Bevil, Cheltenham, Tobacconist

In 1840 they are reporting the bankruptcy of a John William Bevil, Cheltenham, General Agent. This bankruptcy is annulled in September 1841.

Between these we have the bankruptcy of a John Bevil, Auctioneer, Broker, Appraiser,  in Kennington in 1835.

The same person?
