Thanks Steve,

but I have already seen that one. Basically there seem to be 3 main contenders:-

  • The local bigwigs i.e. the DORMERs
  • The BELSONs, whoever they may be
  • The LANEs (who imo look likely to have been in-laws to the BELSONs)

The LANEs seem to have "held" the church when Thomas LANE died in 1535, but seeing as it was confiscated by Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1540, they were probably tenants of the Abbey and then rented it out. They became holders of a sub-manor of Hughenden in the late 1500s and three of them subsequently became its vicars.

The Dormers are most likley.  http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/DORMER.htm#Robert DORMER (1º B. Dormer of Wing)

No doubt you've seen this as well. ;D ;D ;D

Good luck.

Also, may I ask....Why the interest in the Church House.?  I'm just nosey, I guess.

Why the interest in the Church House.?

Am interested in the LANEs; when they arrived there, their status, did they just farm & preach, etc?

I assume you have the PR's for Hughenden. But just in case I have found these records.

First Baptism in Hughenden is Alecia - filia to Thomas Lane. 21 Dec 1576.
Second baptism is Elizabeth - Filia to Hug Lane. Vic.  8 Dec 1577. (I assume this is Hugh Lane, Vicar or Viscount).

First female Lane marriage is John Fellowe to Eliz Lane. 4 Feb. 1559
First male Lane marriage is Richardus Lane to Isabella Payne. 24 Oct 1560.

Taken from BucksFHS Hughenden Transcripts.

I'll leave you in peace now, but if I can be of any more help please ask. :)

Hi Supermoussi.

I have just returned from a visit to England, and I visited Hughenden Church.  I picked up a small booklet, while I was there.

There is a bit of History in this booklet, regarding Church House.

Quote: 'In pre-reformation days, this site was occupied by a small religious house for six monks and a prior.  Between the reformation and Queen Anne's time it may have served as the house of the parish priest, being replaced by the old vicarage(now a private house), in the first quarter of the 17th century.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Church House was converted, by Countess Lady Conygnham into 4 Alms houses, with a 5th reserved for the parish clerk.'
.

Quote: ......'Late Geoffrey(de Clinton) or his successor, made over the Manor of Hughenden to the priory of Kenilworth as an endowment, and it seems that the monks established a small priory at what is now the Church House, from which to administer their property and serve the church'.

Quote:...............'This arrangement continued until the dissolution of the monasteries in Henry 8th's reign, when it was given in 1540 to the Dormer family.'

Quote: 'The Dormers, or their relations by marriage,  held the property until until it was sold in 1737 to Charles Savage'.

Apparently,  there are.........'.....other interesting documants, held at County arcivist at County Hall'.
