Archibald Gammie
« on: Wednesday 06 November 13 16:13 GMT (UK) »
Looking for info on Archibald Gammie died on the ship City of Quebec in 1859 aged 31 (Scotlands People - Maritime Register does not show names of parents) - particularly trying to confirm date of birth and the names of his parents - various family trees are showing his date of birth as 1824 and his parents as Joseph Gammie and Margaret Davie.  However the death certificate of Joseph Gammie lists all his children by 2 marriages and there is no mention of an Archibald.
Archibald Gammie was married to a Jane Hay and lived in Elgin

He is mentioned if you do a people search on the Moray Council site, Libindx - it mentions his death at sea and says he was born c. 1828 Archiestown, Knockando.

The 1851 census (on FreeCEN) shows him at Ardgay, Alves, Morayshire. His birthplace is given as Elgin and his age as 25. In addition to his wife (born Duffus), there are children, Janet (3) and James (1).

I cannot find him on FreeCEN on the 1841 census. Maybe he will appear then on ScotlandsPeople which is more complete. There is always a chance of him being with his parents in 1841, although it is quite likely that he was working away from home by that time. Assuming that James was his first son, perhaps that is a pointer to his own father's name. If there are witnesses to the baptisms of his children, they may also be relatives.

Hi,

There is an Archibald Gammy on the 1841 Census at Burnside, Elgin . He's a 15 year old Agricultural Labourer and is in the same household as Andrew Loggie a 17 year old Ag Lab. I found this on Freecen.
Doesn't help narrow down parents I'm afraid :-\ if this is your man.

Looby :)

Interestingly Bill7, there are a couple of Gamie families on the 1841 Census living at Duffus which is where Jane Hay gives as place of birth on 1851 Census. You can view them for free on www,freecen.org.uk

Archibald and Jane have a son Archibald in 1855 at Elgin. This birth certificate should have both Archibald snr. and Jane's place of birth recorded and where and when they married. 1855 certs should contain more info than later certs as when compulsory registration began the first years records were very detailed.
