I stumbled across the link in Ancestry earlier, but after a look I'm struggling to piece the families together, so wondered if anyone on here with a wee bit of time on their hands could have a look for me. Samuel makes for interesting reading if nothing else
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Rutherford_CrockettSamuel Rutherford Crockett was a minster then novelist, seems to be of a similar style to Sir Walter Scott; romantic scottish history with a big dose of fantasy thrown in.
Anyway I have most of the census records for this Samuel:
B: 24 Sep 1859 (not 1860 as you will find on the net)
D: 16 Apr 1914 in France (allegedly, I have found nothing to prove this)
From his birth cert he was illegitimate, no father's name but mother was Annie Crocket.
Samuel appeared to change his name whilst attending Edinburgh Uni to a more romantic 'Samuel Rutherford Crockett' Whether Rutherford was his father's name or made up for respectability, I have no idea.
Anyway from the census records I have Annie's parents as William Crocket and Mary Dickson.
From the notes on Ancestry, it may be that William Crocket is related to my G.G.G.G Granny Christian Crocket. William was a farmer of quite a few acres so reasonably well off.
Christian was christened at Lochrutton on 20 sep 1778, she married John Hyslop of Brae, who was also a reasonably well off farmer. Christian's father was John Crocket. I can find nothing more on John Crocket.
Does anyone fancy having a look? I can't see anything for Annie's, Mary's or William's death.
Ideally I would like to find something on Willaim's birth/parents. Or if William and Christian are possibly related??
If nothing else, the story of Samuel Rutherford Crockett makes interesting reading!
Thanks
